I'm advance planning for a trip to the Adirondacks next year and would like recommendations on finding small, quiet, lake side spots to camp. Close to hiking trailes would be a plus. Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Check out Lake Eaton State Campground in Long Lake, NY. It's pretty much boondocking (I think they have water), but you can camp steps away from the water and there are some beautiful hiking trails right from the campground.
Try Rollins Pond state park up near Saranac Lake. It is with Fish Creek (noisy) but Rollins is more secluded and quiet but every site is on the water. New York State Office of Parks Recreation and Historic Preservation has a nice mapping feature to it to show you where all the campgrounds are. Enjoy!

A Boondocking location can be found at "south meadow" near lake placid. (Click the link below for directions.).. There are a few trail head parking lots in this area as well but can be small for anything but truck camper size vehicle. South meadow "had" half a dozen spots or less and was "free" a while back, but may have changed .I dont know what the rules are here but the last time I was here I stay 4 days for no fee at all......No tables or fireplaces back then ...Water ? maybe but I`m not sure.
