I have started musing over the coming summers AWOL adventure and while looking at the map the sierra nevada caught my eye. Anyone know this area well? Is it worth a 1500 mile drive coming and going?
Pyramid Lake is 'dispersed camping' along most of the southwest shore. Sutcliff has an RV park with the dump and ranger stations. Pyramid Lake is an Indian reservation and the Indians require an $11/day permit to visit. We like to camp just north of Sutcliff at Pelican Point. Last March was trout spawning season there and the shore was wall to wall fisherman. One of our members got talked into $30 of fishing gear when he went down to the Sutcliff bar for a visitor's permit - we didn't see much of him for the rest of the rally (unless we went down to the beach). Between the tufa, the lake itself, and the mountains there is a lot for those who study visuals to attend to.
Crowds aren't usually a problem unless you hit holidays and visit the more famous spots. Both the BLM and the NFS have a lot of dispersed camping along US 395 and adjacent areas. The biggest problem is just finding a good spot that you can get into and out of. A stop at the visitor's centers and ranger headquarters in the regions can often help with this. There are also some good pointers from airforums members in various threads and on other RV discussion forums.
Pyramid Lake gets towards the north Washoe County wilderness with Soldier Meadows, the Black Rock (Burning Man is a week long dry camp rally there with 50k attendees) and Great Smokey deserts, and the California Surprise valley. A caravan on the Winnemucca to the Sea highway could be fun.
There is so much and it is a long ways from one side to the other. Part of the problem is figuring out just what you want to see and do in the time and resources available.

Get a map from the Ranger Station. Willow point, the furthest access point is, well covered in a giant Willow Canape. Magicial!
I don't know about the rates Leipper mentioned, all I know is last week I paid the posted rate of $75.00 for 10 nights.
There is a Pyramid Lake Marina a few miles up the road, and full hook-ups are $20.00 a nite. Water,gas,propane, dump are there for a price. The Ranger Station also has dump and water for a fee.
Fish, you can catch a 26" Cutthroat Trout with a piece of gum on a string.
That location looks great! its like an ad for the most perfect get away! I always see those places in pictures but can never seem to arrive there. I will check it out
