Many Montana towns have a city park, rodeo or fairgrounds where one can overnight for free or a small fee...some even have electricity.
Along with the excellent information provided here, I also recommend Don Wright's Guide to Free Campgrounds which lists not only free places, but places that cost $12 or less per night. We use it a lot as we travel. Like, Bob, we rarely stay at an RV park, preferring national parks, forest service, BLM, and COE campgrounds (and the like), city and county parks, etc.
