Boondocking-What is it? Why, simply stated, it is your voucher for the rapidly diminishing resource of personal freedom.

That's easy, just remove the battery from it when she isn't looking.
BTW, as far as the definition of boondocking, think "Gilligan's Island".

I discussed this a bit in my blog yesterday. I love boondocking!
Boondocking sites are not only cheaper, they are usually much more private.

Not necessarily, since some campgrounds are not of the "boondocking" variety...and many boondocking sites are not contained within actual campgrounds.

You're right...but we are friends - not strangers and it was by choice! There were twelve of us total...including 2 SOBs and a sheepherders wagon.

highway 1 between half moon bay and santa cruz
these are a couple a spots we had last weekend..
not good for setting up outside, but for a movie and bedtime it was fine.
also the price was right..
i suppose there is an element of risk, with traffic and all.
perhaps, we will do better next time.
i was told that one can legally park overnight in a pullout.
maybe that is for the cal highways...
the third pic is from earlier this month, north of bodega bay, wrights beach.
we had to park near the kiosk, as we were part of the overflow

ah, i feel your pain. i like dogs well enough, but cannot abide a nuisance barker.
back on topic. the idea of boondocking sounds just lovely. i like the idea of being 'off the grid' as it were. would that i could live this way for a bit, but it's not a reality that could be possible for me, for a multitude of reasons.
anyone ever hear of the cartoon 'boondocks'? i love it and even own a book of said comic strip...

Why Boondock?
Because that's where things are to see that you would never know were there.
Here is a place in NM. So walk through the canyons centuries later, wake and walk a river of sand, stretching and ducking under branches and fallen trees. (Of course after a 15 minute blast of furnace, coffee, breakfast, read the paper on the can...Camping on the ground just isn't the same after an AS!).
We slept next to a bellowing breathing exhaling pumping breath of a natural gas well. It awoke always late at night to release thousands of strange slobbering dragons, or only one that stayed snapping at the gate. They disappeared in daylight. Reassured by the no smoking within the area where I was smoking sign, and my heater puffing away. I took somebody's advice and took a hike.
We went and looked at stones, rocks, trees clouds cabins wrecked cars cliffside dwellings and hikes, doing what we wanted to when and with who. It was pretty cool, and at night the clanking of the yaw under announced more dragons under pines and stars.
When the road ends the trail begins, may it always be full of dragons, trees stars and faithful companions to keep bears at bay.

Hi,
We have also 'docked in the 'dacks. Last year we spent a weekend at Horseshoe Lake with the airstream. You have to do some research/exploring to find places. It is easier with a truck and tent as some places are untouchable with a trailer. You may find a place within a mile or less of a main road and be totally by yourself. These are exactly the questions I have. Our family is considering going off grid, but is it really practical and do-able in a city?
We are going full-time in our AS in about a month, and right now it is totally gutted! We're freaking out a little, because it's crunch time.
We should be camped in one spot for the next year on an Air Force Base in sweltering S. Texas. Is it financially feasible to live w/o electricity w/o our young children dying of heat exhaustion? I've heard solar panels are expensive and need to be replaced fairly often.
How long do batteries last with average use? How are they recharged?
How does one shower, etc. without water hookup? Where do you take your waste water?
Do you use a composting toilet? Where do you dump your waste?
Where do you dump your trash?
Since we can't make it to Quartzsite anytime soon, could you tell us any of the secrets you have learned?
