State Land Camping

I presume each state has different laws for remote (not a structured campsite) camping. My only experience so far was in Michigan were you could camp pretty much wherever you wanted on state land, so long as you filled out a card and left it on the trailer.

Was wondering if anyone knows about NY State, most likely the Adirondacks. How do you know if its acceptable/legal to camp in a remote location?

I tried going through the state website and either I missed it (which doesn't seem difficult in many govt websites), or it doesn't appear to be posted. Assuming I missed it.
