Southwest SE Utah:Blanding to Natural Bridges

This last weekend was a trip to the Cedar Mesa area and a boondocking trip to Salvation Knoll. One of the best views I have seen, The road looks like nothing, but about a mile down it is a nice flat spot (one of several) i set up at. Views were the ENTIRE four corners area. A looking out the trailer or at most a short stroll leads to views of Blanding, Sleeping Ute Mountain, the Blue Mountains, The Carrizo Mountains, Chuska Mountains, Shiprock, and of course the Bears Ears. A little drive allows one to see the Henry's and Navajo mountain, Grand Gulch is about a 20 minute drive if you are up to hiking, and mule canyon close. Natural Bridges is about 15 miles west, and of course its not too much further if you wish to go to lake powell.

I filled my water tanks in Blanding at Blue Mountain RV Park, for a nominal fee (the price of a cup of coffee), and even though my old girl has her dings and dents (THE TRAILER lol) the lady complimented me on it, though of course she thought it was an AS. So yes im giving a thumbs up to Blue Mountain RV Park - welcoming folks even though i was only getting a tank of water.

Just a word of warning, the Cottonwood Campground in the bottom of Comb Wash has no water, though its so unknown it almost always has space available. (not marked on most maps). Call the Monticello BLM office (435)587-1500 for local info.

BE sure to see the ruins in the area, and a trip through Grand Gulch (for those who like to hike) is something you cant pass up.

Also, looks like it will be a good Pinon crop this year. The trees are loaded!

If you're a collector of native American arts, the trading post at Blue Mountain RV Park is not to be missed. Stayed there in May and Duke and his wife are great.

We stayed there this summer and that sweet old couple are still there. The Trading Post doesn't look like much from the outside, in fact we almost didn't go in, but we are glad we did. If you know what you are looking for, they have some excellent jewelry and baskets at a good price. He will talk your ear off, but he is interesting and has been in busy there for decades. Oh yeah, the campground was nice too.

We went to Comb Wash in SE Utah after the ABQ Balloon Fiesta, with a two night detour to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs Resort to "take the waters".

This is fine boondocking country. Remote, dramatic scenery, dark skies, and uncrowded at this time of year. We had days in the low 70's and nights in the low 40's. There were a good number of dispersed and accessible camp sites from which to choose. Dump and fill at one of the two RV parks in Blanding on the way in. Many uncharted ancient dwelling sites to explore by hiking or 4WD. Natural Bridges Natl Monument is just 20 miles away, with a small CG (no hookups) and excellent hiking.
