Rachel, Nevada

Any good sites near Rachel? We are going to drive the extraterrestrial highway in a couple of weeks. I know that the Little A'le'Inn offers some dusty hookups, but we'd rather find a place with less action.

This is a great road - a piece of Americana worth the effort. Facilities and amenities are virtually nonexistent. I didn't see anywhere designated to park a trailer but no shortage of places to boondock It's a very special drive.
For sure go there if you have the opportunity.

Head a little south of there, ignore the signs, tell 'em Joe sent you. Area 51 has full hookups for shiny objects. They don't like SOBs though.

I'd prefer to stay in Caliente or Tonopah, and visit Rachel as I drove through. I love to boondock and have no reluctance to camp on federal land all by myself most places, but I don't think I could feel comfortable camping alone in that area. YMMV, of course.

Call these guys: Welcome to MUFON - Recent UFO Sightings | Alien Encounters | MUFON.com They have people around there all the time. They gotta know the best watering holes and tourist spots.

There's always this guy: Art Bell - Midnight in the Desert. He lives nearby as well. Wonder where he buys his groceries?? He may have 30 amp hook-ups.

Just kidding, sorta, or am I?

Last time I was there (twice), the Independence Day "monument" was placed. All before the movie hit the theaters, didn't have a clue about why it was there. There were long single wide mobile homes partitioned off as small motel rooms. I could boondock there, that bar pulls some very interesting people with stories, , ,

We know the area from multiple trips, but never stopped over night. Perhaps the Mufon people might be worth a shot.

I remember a small ATV area along 93 West of Caliente - we camped there in our poptop a few years ago, but cannot find it on the map. Might be an abducted campground...

Found it!

Here is the site: you need to paste the coordinates into Google maps and switch to satellite view.

My wife cannot remember the name of the place (it had a sign at the road), but it is an ATV playground. Back when we camped there, it was deserted...

I kinda, sorta thought you were joking. Looks like you may have an interesting trip ahead of you. Enjoy. Keep a camera pointed up, especially after sunset. Ya never know......

Beautiful TV, BTW.

Edit: Oh yeah, when u get back, post lots of pics.

My wife found the official name of the area:
Chief Mountain South http://www.blm.gov/style/medialib/bl...VTrail.pdf.pdf

As mentioned, we camped there a few years ago. I am still looking for an area closer to Rachel (my original question) because driving to Caliente will add more miles and time to the already long day (we will start the day in Carson City).

We ended up checking out two NV State parks near Cliente.
First one is Kershaw-Ryan SP. Pretty deserted in early July with 90+ degrees. Gravel back in site with electric hookup. It is a small campground in a nice canyon close to the town of Cliente. Definitely worth a stopover if one does not want to stay in the ATV area, which is pretty much without facilities.

On the way back, we visited Cathedral Gorge SP, definitely more scenic, sites are further apart (electric only). Beautiful rock (or clay) formations! We ended up driving North via Ely and route 50 back to CA (the loneliest road in the world - not so much any more).

Regarding the black mailbox: It got stolen early this year!! A small shrine is forming there...

It is Caliente, not Cliente of course. Steve is making corrections from the Nirvana...
