Question

We are headed that way on our way back from Fla to NY in 2 weeks, from the outer Banks what root would be best to head north?

Bob,

If you have time for a journey, take the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel to the Eastern Shore of VA and continue up route 13. We took the Lewes-Cape May ferry when we last made the trip and enjoyed it.

My least favorite route is to meet I-64 to east of Richmond then pick up I295 to meet I95 north of Richmond. I95 is just all work and no play.

Pat

Trailers on ferries?

I thought trailers were forbidden on the ferries? Is that not the case? Can you take trailers on the ferries?

We also like Camp Hatteras. I plan to go there this summer.

see ya on the road,

It's the only way to get to some of the campgrounds!

Woodalls shows two with good ratings. One has already been discussed Hatteras Sand RV Resort (www.hatterassands.com not much of a website).

The other is Frisco Woods Campground (in Frisco, of course). www.outer-banks.com/friscowoods Lotsa useful stuff on that site, the ferry schedule, for example.

Have a great trip!

We are on Cape Hatteras as I write this, our planning-a-day-at-a-time mode failing us when we discovered the National Seashore shoreside campgrounds are all closed for at least a couple more weeks.

We took the toll and the free ferry here yesterday morning and there was an AS with tow vehicle waiting in line to go south when we arrived. There are no signs nor other restrictions posted on length, etc., just charge accordingly. We met a couple back the road with a large class A who ferry here all the time without problem.

We saw several campgrounds here, opted for a PA one (Sands of Time) in Avon for $20 a night with full hookups. It is not on the shore, but nothing is very far from the shore here , is very neat/tidy and has lots of sites this time of year. This PA cg is unusual in that they have no restriction on length of stay for the 50% discount. We are going to do our exploring from here before heading inland.

Travel safe,

Maggie

We stayed at Frisco Woods last Fall, very close to the Sound. A huge windstorm resulted in water lapping at our AS wheels, so we relocated in the middle of the night! Exciting, but still a great campground. The national parks are beautiful if you want to boondock.

These sound like some sweet spots! If you get a chance add them to the favorite campsites google map. It is starting to get enough entries to become a useful planing tool, I think.

Camp Hatteras Resort & RV Park - The World Class RV Resort on the OBX

We go to Camp Hatteras several times a year. Frisco is nice but more primitive. Never heard of Hatteras Sands.

Everyone is getting me all fired up to buy an AS. Have to wait for my ex to sell our house first.

But let me chime in a few things. If you go in mid to late October and the fall has been warm the ocean is still warm enough for swimming. I grew up just north of the outerbanks in VA Beach. I've been swimming in the ocean here well into November many times.

All it takes is one cold snap in October to get rid of the bugs and the ocean can still be enjoyed.....

I've tent camped at Camp Hatteras, nice place with an indoor pool.

No matter where you are in the outer banks there are great places to eat and see. Though you might have to drive. Kill Devil Hills - you can hang glide from the largest sand dune on the East coast (if not the whole country), Wright Memorial, and of course at around mile post nine at Nags Head they do have a 5 Guys Burgers & Fries on the by-pass road.

If you go in the summer take in "The Lost Colony" on Roanoke Island. Everyone should see it once.

Also, on Roanoke Island there have been many many sightings of Andy Griffith over the years....
