O'Haver Lake NFS Campground near Salida, CO

Has anyone been here lately? We are looking at heading that way in Sept from MO.. Our first trip w/ our new to us Bambi. (04)
Just wondering if the roads going in are still gravel for miles..
Thanks,
Jeff

Jeff, we were in the Salida, CO, area two years ago in late September--totally gorgeous country. Snow came in right behind us, btw. I'm no help on your NFS campground, but all the high country drives we took (sans AS!) were rugged gravel, sometimes dirt and rutted. Surely entry to a campground will not be as rough as the Aspen drives we took. Sorry to not address your question well, but just wanted to tune in to wish you well on your trip and hope your time in that country is as much fun as ours ~G

Hi Jeff,
We were there in Aug. 2006. The road was gravel and in good condition at that time. We actually got excited on the drive in by thinking that we were going to find a nice remote campsite with no crowd. Wrong! The lake was nice, but the sites were small for us and the worst part was all the ATVs buzzing around.

Hello - O'Haver is still gravel. September might not be too crowded. We almost went there this past June after our axle change out, but decided on a very nice campground SW of Pueblo instead. If you are interested, it is called Lake Isabelle. The part we went to has electric hookups. If the destination you are looking for has to be around Salida, I might have some other suggestions- PM me

Airstream25, thanks for the reply.. We may have to rethink this..

There were no ATVs up there when we were there, but it was close to ten years ago.. We had the three kids with us then, and we had a great time with the canoe catching trout. We are looking for peace and quiet this time..

Jeff

O'Haver Lake

We were there two weekends ago with our 19 ft. The road up to the CG is
pretty rough and rutted but doable if you take it slow. Very
very crowded. Even in Sept I would not start up that road
without a reservation.
Lake Isabelle is very nice with great access. Also consider Angel
of Shavano just West of Salida. Great beaver pond fishing
from your front door.

Colo StreamN, thanks for the update.. I checked reservations, and all sites are booked up from wed the 23rd on... That must be opening day for hunting seasons..

We are changing locations to Lake City area, I have never camped there, but from what I've read it looks ok. I will check out Angel of Shavano, we have camped at Isabelle before and liked it, but it was not as much as Ohaver..
Thanks again,
Jeff
