Maggie,

I'm so excited for you going on this trip, I've been envious from the start. (It's on my bucket list for the future after following along on this thread.) I hope you will be able to make the Boondock Rally at Rudolf Bennitt this October so you can tell us all about it.

You and Lily have a blast!

Tina

PS - love the Agatha Christie references...

Thanks, Tina.

We are all pretty excited about this, and I will pass on the well wishes from everyone when we gather today.

This photo is On the Road to Quemado....that's the Eklunds, of course, in front of me.

So we're back from Quemado/Apache National Forest and the great company arranged by our new friends, Ray, and his most lovely and delightful wife Nancy! The unseasonably wet weather conditions (read muddy roads) forced an alternative camp site at Piņon Campground @ Quemado Lake. In reality it wasn't a tremendous disappointment as it was a surprisingly nice, spacious, private and exceptionally well managed Forest service CG, and we had a separate loop all to ourselves, with a generous roofed commons ('long house') area for socializing - thanks go out to Ray for scouting this backup plan and great solution.

The afternoon thunderstorms didn't keep up from exploring the intended site that Ray and Nancy scouted last month, along with other spots of geologic and cultural interest. The vastness and depopulated character of SW New Mexico is inspiring, even to those of us who live in the state... factor in an unusually wet year and you find surprisingly verdant landscapes, replete with chilly mornings, cool afternoon temperatures, swarms of hummingbirds, wildflowers and ubiquitous trees like the fantastic, often centuries old 'alligator junipers' that merge with the ponderosa and piņon pines.

Our drive down took us thru the BLM & Forest Service's jointly managed El Malpais National Monument south of Grants, an unexpected confluence of vast lava flows and amber sandstone cliffs. Speaking with a ranger (a boon-docker himself) at the visitor center, it was clear that boon-docking opportunities were abundant; even encouraged and appreciated by the management staff. The region is striking and demands revisiting.

Because I took so many photos, I'm going to upload a few of them in a couple separate posts or so as I'm not clear how many I can attach in a given post(?) Below are just a few, with more to follow as I find free moments without gallery visitors - it's the tourist season in Taos!

Cheers!
Chris

These are the pit house ruins, the rows of rocks you see being where the walls were....the top being a thatching of sorts made from tree branches.

Ray called this area the New York City of pit houses.....they were everywhere.

What Chris said.

It was a really outstanding adventure, thanks to Ray and Nancy who coordinated and led, and all the rest of our attendees who shared so willingly and generously of their individual knowledge and expertise.

Thanks to everyone for a truly memorable trip.
