My wife and I have been RV'ng since we got married 36 years ago. Over this time we have had tents, 5 pop ups, motor home, fifth wheel, and now we have a Airstream Classic 31. We've found that there is no perfect solution. When the kids were small the popups were great and we never imagined going to a MH or TT. Then we started traveling greater distances on trips which required longer days on the road and more stops to get to our destination. We traded to a MH and loved that means of travel, but it was very expensive. We sold the MH and went to a fiver. We really liked the fiver but needed to upgrade to a trailer that was 4 season so we could safely camp in Yellowstone in the early spring and late fall. After looking a lot, we decided on the Airstream. It only requires 9 1/2 feet of clearance which allows us to go places the fiver couldn't. It's amazing what difference 2-3 feet makes. While we don't have the storage we had in the fiver, the level floor of a AS is great. No longer have to constantly go up and down stairs which helps on the knees. The AS is also more stable when set up. We don't get nearly as much rocking motion. We found that we have much more space in our truck bed to carry other stuff we couldn't previously load. We also found that AS does a great job of providing space for putting things. We ended up with a lot more storage capacity than we thought we would have.

I understand that it is sitting on a ranch somewhere in the San Antonio area. It was at the AS dealer in Buda a couple of years ago for some repairs. See my thread elsewhere on this site with photos I took at that time.

It is a real beast!

8 batteries? and solar panels?. buy a 1000 watt generator and charge the batteries every day. I bet that is enviriomentally a lot better than the total effect of the alternative you are considering. and a thousands of dollars cheaper' and a lot lighter.
Problem solved, now pick out the airstream you like and go camping.
5th wheels are so "last year" right now.

Just an FYI, and not that it really matters, but I'm pretty sure that is an Argosy fifth wheel that has been repainted into Airstream colors. A walk around it at the last rally it and me (me and it?) attended showed several "Argosy" badges that had been painted over.

Squarestreams

Under Squarestream there is lots of info there. The Squarestream 5th wheel was made as a Argosy 1986 to 1988,then as Airstream 1989 and 1990.1996 Airstream made another 5th wheel and named in Integrity.

I love my 89 argosy 5th wheel. It was surprising to me that I get the same fuel economy towing my "whale" as I did towing my 27' argosy trailer. Same F-250D truck. At the time AS introduced the fifth wheel to compete, they also introduced the motorcoach. Most dedicated AS fans towed with a suburban or station wagon etc. The fifth wheel caused you to buy a truck as well, so the motorcoach sold well for those making the jump, and the fifth wheel had a difficult time in the market.

I agree with the suggestions of forgetting 1000#s of batteries and use a generator. Convert them to propane for a cleaner fuel and as mentioned above, I bet your over all real impact for any environmental concerns would be less.

5th wheel

The trailer in the front is a standard Airstream "squarestream" trailer. That called that line of Airstream trailers "Land Yachts" when that were produced from 1989 to 1991. The standard "squarestream" Argosy trailers were made from 1986 to 1989 if my memory is correct.

The 5th wheels in both lines may have only been made in 1989, or perhaps slightly longer as I noted in my last post. I do not have the information to confirm either way.
What year did they make the last Airstream 5th wheel? I found one but I need to determine yr and value to make the guy an offer.

You should be able to see the date of manufacture on the plate attached to the lower front left side of the unit. Mine is close to the last if not the last Argosy they made before switching to silver paint and calling it an Airstream. Mine was manufactured in fall of '88 but is titled and sold as an "1989" it is # 136. I believe they made the airstream by customer order only into early 1991. If the unit has been kept well, value will be higher, but most of these units need a lot of restoration due to water damage from notorious leaky roof. Good luck

If It is in good shape do you think it is worth between $3,000 to $5000? I know
Airstream is top of the line but I was wondering if I could still get parts.

It could easily be worth far more than that if it's in good shape.

The AS 5th wheel I found is a 35' with 2 slideouts made in '95. It has water damage around the vent in bathroom and floor under one of the slideouts needs to be replaced. Have you or anyone else here got any info on what is involved in replacing the floor under the slideout? Thanks for your help
