Ghost towns anyone?

I turned around and found myself with the summer free. I have 2 green dogs, a fridge full of 35mm film, a freezer full of elk, a beater Hasselblad with a jammed back, tires full of air and yearning to spend time in the boondocks.

I spent the last 3 days pouring over ghost town places in Utah, Colorado, Nevada, the BLM site and trying to shrink my possessions to pack more pooch food and water.

I'm parked in closed NM Forest where I'm working at a kennel (Ruidoso), but thought I'd ask if anyone is up for a mini caravan or meeting at some out of the way places that would be great for dogs, hiking and photography?

I have a 4x5 camera in storage that I've never used and need a lens or two, and old Contax IIIa with a dead meter but classic lenses, and a Leica MP with some decent glass. Plus the beater 'blad.

This is the site that has bitten me: Ghost Towns | Hundreds of Pictures of ghost towns from Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho and Montana

It's interactive, showing sites on a map by county, many photos, directions, some weather info and wether 2WD or 4WD is required to enter (TTs never mentioned).

Anyone headed that way or want to think about a mini caravan?

Cheers-michael

There is a ghost town near Magadellena named Kelly and old mine town. A few buildings, the mine headshaft and a tailings pile where you can find Smithsonite.

I know a guy in Pino's Wells, an almost ghost town, and the site of the only political assassination in New Mexico. He said I could come down and poke around. I think it would be a great place to go metal detecting. Pino's Wells is north of Cleverdale on Rt42 halfway between Corona and Willard. Not to far for either of us. Has the worst dang blow flies I've seen in NM in fly season.

I used to take a lot of pics, in fact used to teach photography but now I'm just point and shoot. Not quite everybody stand in front of the sign and say cheese but close enough. I, my wife and dogs would enjoy an outing like this.

Oh my, when Lynn and I were first married (1969) we did much researching and then locating ghost towns in Calif. Nevada, Oregon and Idaho. One summer we did not drive on pavement for a week. Our 1962 Pontiac Grand Prix did pretty good on the rutted mountain and desert roads. Never got stuck but had to rehang the muffler 3 times and lost a transmission shift lever. What fun! I was into serious photography then too. Lot's of B&W and color slides filed away. I may just have to bring them out. 2 years into our marriage we began a family and those wild times got exchanged for another.

Michael, Great thread. We can't meet you but love to explore ghost towns. The link to the website is very cool. I found several of the places we have been to and it was fun to relive those times through the photos. Places like Masonic, CA, Chemung Mine, CA, where you can really explore with no restrictions are what we like best. Of course, protected places like Bodie, CA and Rhyolite, NV are fun too, and offer some fantastic photo opportunities.

I'm throwing my 5x7 and Rollei in the back and heading up to Lee Vining on Tuesday to meet with some like minded folks. We will most likely be spending some time at Bodie and a few other places. Come on up if you make it this far west.

Nyx and Jupitor, ready for boondocking

Nyx is the pooch with the leash in her mouth leading Jupitor. Nyx is great in the TT and Jup is getting to be, I need to dynamite either one to get them off the bed.

Yesterday I took them down Trail 22 near Philadelphia Canyon outside of Ruidoso and they were really into the hike, Nyx in lead off leash and Jup still on a training collar right with me.

In California I used to be a river rat with a wolf named Vesta, also exploring the mines near Smartsville (the best prime rib I ever had was the Driftwood Inn on Hwy 20 near Beale AFB) and 4 wheeling the Alpha and Omega sites.

The other picture is of Nyx with her pack in training for New Orleans. She'll get tagged to carry some lenses.

I traded my stereo for more elk as I am homeless , and looking at the the site I referenced above, frying some bacon on the skillet, and just realized I need a coffee percolator for the stove top. I should be leaving about the 15th and I hope to meet some boondockers on the trails!

I kind of like Ghost Towns and History of the American West to search them out. It doesn't have as much info about individual towns as Ghost Towns | Hundreds of Pictures of ghost towns from Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho and Montana, but seems to list more of them. (It was on ghosttown.com that I discovered that there was a town called Agua Fria just a mile down the street from us, now with no visible remains.)

We like to visit the ghost towns here in montana, they were mostly gold and silver mining towns ,mostly shut down when the US government quit buying the silver, very interesting , and a lot of fun .

We are getting packed for a High Sierra Rally in Bridgeport Ca. The highlight will be nearby ghost town Bodie. I've been there several times. Here are some of my pictures from 1969 and 1980.
