Friday night Boondock Spot between Central NJ and Cape Cod

Hi,

We are going to go to Cape Cod this weekend from our home in Central NJ, and since we can't depart early on Friday (It's a long story, but simply put both of us can't take this Friday off), we will probably end up in spending Friday night somewhere on the way. We plan to take Garden State Parkway, I-287 and I-95.

Since we got our 2016FC23D, this is to be the longest trip so far.

If we can get to Milford, CT on Friday night, there seem to be a couple of places that we can stop and rest, like Park & Ride (across the street from Walmart) and Cracker and Barrel.

I wonder if there is any place else before getting to Milford to stop for the night. I know this is the most densely populated area, so there may not be anywhere.

I-95 seems to have several rest areas with spots for large vehicles. If we get there, say at midnight, and if the spots aren't already taken, would it be okay to stop and rest for a few hours?

Thanks!

Atsushi

How about pushing a little further and hitting one of the casinos ? Foxwood or mohegan sun both allow rvs ? I have done it a couple times . You could probably grab some food and a drink anytime of day .

Mohegan is a great stop, I've done that and it overlooks a river. It's basically free dry campin at a casino.

But there are lotsa places before that and along the way on i95. Tons of rest areas, but the Walmarts don't let ya overnight around there. Also there's a bass pro shop in Bridgeport. I ain't ever stayed there or asked em but I have stayed at other bass pro shops and they're always real friendly.

From the end of the GSP go north on NYS Thruway, then east on I-84. I think the first CT rest stop allows overnight parking.

Search above for "I-84 CT rest stop" and also for "I-84 to Cape Cod." I am in the car now, or would give you more detailed advice. Avoid I-95 IMO.

Have fun!

Peter

PS - I think you need to print out a PDF to submit to Mohegan with all your info.. Not sure if they have the form there.

Changes for October:

If you don't have the print out security has had them available. A sign at the parking lot has there phone number just call them an someone will drive out to you to sign you in . You just have to leave your lights on so they can spot you .

The CT I-84 eastbound rest stop is right after you enter CT, before Danbury, and it is just east of Exit 2. It also has a free dump station. I recall there being quite a few large parking spots for semi's and RV's, but it might be full overnight IMO.

I am probably going to stop there tomorrow morning, and will check it out!

Have fun!

I would skip the Foxwoods with its tight slots and early 80's decor, and head over to the Mohegan Sun. We hit both a couple of weekends ago (stayed at the Mystic KOA for a couple of nights, which was OK). The buffet at the Mohegan Sun is wonderful and the slots were much looser than the Foxwoods. Both places do have free RV parking.
Always check - http://www.casinocamper.com/ is is usually up to date.

We were going to stop there on our way to Maine a couple of weeks ago but it was disturbingly empty and deserted. Ended up going a little further to the Cabela's in East Hartford.

Thanks Alan. AllStays says there are 20 truck parking places, and that CT DOT has no prohibitions on overnight parking. Thus AllStays concludes that it is permitted.

Good to read that you are on the road again!

Curious to know the day of the week, and at what hour that was? I think during the business week trucks use it overnight.

Thanks,

Peter

PS on the I-84 options. After you cross the Hudson River eastbound, the exit for NY Rt. 9 northbound has a Cracker Barrel on the right/east side of 9 with three dedicated RV spots, and a fairly large parking lot. The same exit [9 northbound] has a Walmart Superstore on the west side of 9. The CB and WM are on opposite sides of 9 just north of 84, in other words. I was just at CB for a country ham breakfast! A trailer was parked on the south edge of the WM lot, with its tongue jack deployed, somI assume they spent the night.

FYI -- There is also a good AS mechanic just south on 9 -- George Hernandez of Classic RV:

http://www.airforums.com/forums/f44/...-156048-2.html

The I-84 rest area described in Posts #7 and 11 has lots of truck and RV parking, and the DMV station is at the far end of the first RV parking area, near the info station and rest rooms, which are being redone so only porta potties available.

Have a great trip on Friday.

Peter

Correction -- dump station not DMV station!

Also, sitting here at the Bridgeport ferry just south of I-95, and I see a huge Bass Pro Shops on the east side of the harbor, with an Outdoor World sign on the end of the building. They might have some RV spots for sleeping?

It was on the Friday before Labor Day at @ 1600. There were plenty of trucks in their spaces, but the rv spaces were empty with the exception of a monster boat trailer. Also, the rest area facilities close at 1500.

Wondering where you ended up on Friday night, and how the trip worked out?

Thanks for asking. We ended up sleeping at the first rest stop on I-95. We couldn't leave until 10PM, so we got there shortly before midnight. It was quiet and we slept well.
