Free boondocking with electric

first of all!! hello everyone!!! im a newbie both to this website and rving as well so i am definitely going to listen to what everyone has to say. anyway my question is this: does anyone know of a free place to boondock with electric in the narragansett, rhode island area? has anyone ever used the sockets that are at the base of some light poles? any information you provide will be highly appreciated.

A very unusual question. Generally, "boondocking" refers to being out in the wilderness away from a "campground" where no utilities are available. What you seem to be looking for is an urban place to park where there is free electricity.

If you are a member of one of the fraternal organizations (Lions, Moose, Elks...) a local chapter may allow you to park for awhile. Or a friend or friend of a friend...

As for the power outlets at the base of power poles -- most are simple utility boxes containing the wiring junction. The power provided is often of significantly higher voltage that you need (sometimes 480 volts!). Not to mention that you would technically be stealing power from the municipality that owns the light pole.

Might perhaps consider a different option for your stay in Narragansett.

Many years ago, a business associate told me that there's no such thing as a 'free lunch'...I believe the same may be said of "free electricity' ...someone has to pay for it!

Boondocking and CPing

First.. like mentioned earlier.. boondocking is nothing.. just what you have on-board.. Do you know of Courtesy Parking? In the WBCCI directory, there are three Courtesy Parking spots offering what you are looking for... they will usually give you water and electric.. as a courtesy to you for a few day stay.. of course, it's a WBCCI benefit that often goes un-noticed...

There is one in Cumberland, Little Compton, and N. Smithfield.. not sure if they are close or not....

Good luck..

Rob

Talking Free for $$

For just a few $1000 you can get a good solar system that will produce free electric

The company I work for makes those little plugs that can be found inside the light poles. They were designed as temporary outlets for the utility workers to get power when they were out in the field. More often than not they leave them there (which is good for us) for future use. They connect to only a couple of wires and get regular old 110Volts. You would technically be stealing electricity though if you hooked up to that.

This guy used one to show how to steal a bike in NYC

It's his third version of stealing a bike.

courtesy parking

There are also many members of the forums, that are NOT WBCCI members, that also offer courtesy parking. There is a list on the left side in the menu of the portal screen. You can check to see if there are any members close to where you will be traveling. Be safe in your travels!
