Cabela's carries a manual hoist that fits into the receiver hitch and it has a hoist arm, a crank and steel cable and hook that can lift several hundred pounds..
It's advertised as a deer hoist for hunters.
I use one to lift my generator for loading and unloading it in the pick up bed and, it works great. It has a geared ratio crank that takes all the work out of lifting. No motor needed.

Bluto, you are the man, I promised my Bride I would stay out of Cabala's in the near future as I am drawn to the place like a dear in headlights. But what the heck, this sounds like exactly what I am looking for and I will just have to say the devil made me do it and get in the truck and go.

Harbor Freight has a hydraulic lift cost a lot less than an electric winch and will hoist a 3000W generator into the bed of a pick-up.

Stopped by Cabela's today on my way to Denton Airstream to find out what products they used on their panels; I asked Cabela's salesman about the deer hoist and he said they were out but said they had ten on order. I haven’t made it to harbor Freight yet, but appreciate all the great feedback.

You may also want to check West Marine or similar stores for a manual or electric lift hoist or davit. I bought an electric one for my dad's seawall to help him lift a rowboat out of the water for him. Marine hoists are very common and might provide another option for you.

PTO is my choice, as long as you can keep the engine running.

You could hook that PTO shaft to an electric motor and power your Airstream! Say bye bye to the genset...I think you're onto something!
