I use to spend a week to ten days living out of a
1956 VW bug with a 900cc engine while collecting fossil mammals & reptiles in the Badlands of Western Nebraska in
1965 -
1966. Then with my profits made a
1964 VW 1200cc bug financially possible. At the time I needed:
1- fork
1- spoon
1- butter knife
1- hunting knife with a sharp edge
1- manual can opener that twists
1- Estwing rock pick
A carton of canned and dry food. Sleeping bag. Pup tent. Water jug. Toilet paper. Paper towels to wrap fossil finds. Brown lunch sacks to label and package fossil skulls, tortoise, teeth, lizards, snakes and fossil bird eggs.
Everything I needed fit on the back seat, floor and storage area of either VW Bug.
Today I camp within a 2014 25 foot Airstream. Tow with a Crew Max Toyota Tundra 4x4 5.7L engine. Camper shell. I have two digital televisions. AM/FM/CD/DVD radio. Ceiling fans. Toilet. Refrigerator. Nice comfortable bed and anything else found at a home that is stationary.
From the above two options, tell me which of these two life styles I enjoyed the most and have fondest memories...
It sure is not the Airstream and Toyota Tundra option.
I prefer camping with someone who eats off of paper plates, uses washable plastic forks and has a sense of humor for the evening discussions to make sense of our discoveries.
The setting and rising sun is our clock.
Our conversations drift back to earlier days when the finds were more frequent and closer to the campsite. After 45 years my old clothes "almost fits" and I still have my climbing boots from High School days in the late 1960's.
I do not care how someone looks, dresses, food preferences... as long they are honest, good company and willing to take turns sitting downwind at times.
