DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteers- 50% Off
Under Boondocking and 2016 Quemado, New Mexico May Adventure this post was #11 by nvestysly. Normally $19.95, as that is what I have paid for them myself.
Not all States were available at one time, so some still may not be. I have ALL of the Rocky Mountains State copies. There are OTHER Atlas & Gazetteers out there, so shop and compare. They run about 5 to 7 miles to an inch, but I like the scale. BLM and National Forest public lands are shown for most States that I have presently. Wyoming I find is best for Public Land hunts.
Any road you find on the Atlas, ignores the hundreds that exist that are trails and two ruts to Hunter Camps. But... this is the best most convenient way for MY Off the Grid camp site hunting Adventures. If a map is shown, or a camp ground... you can expect the camp ground is there and the road is not a mirage on a piece of paper.
Thank you nvestysly. One Forum Member already saved a bundle... Not me, but I am just too late. I am sure this is a sale in response to all of the internet options... but I still like paper maps. The Forest Service have the most detailed and the US Geological Survey offer the largest variety, but limited at times for coverage of an area you want.
********
Ray has suggested using the DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer for boondocking trips such as this.
I don't know how long this electronic coupon will last but I found a 50% off code for DeLorme Atlas & Gazetteer on Retail Me Not
The coupon can be found at:
http://www.retailmenot.com/view/delorme.com
The products have to be ordered directly from DeLorme. I purchased two atlases and the coupon code took 50% off of the $19.95 retail price of each. You still have to pay S&H and tax but if you're buying more than one atlas the coupon racks up savings quickly.

Thanks for posting this as a separate thread Ray. Sounds like several people have already made good use of the coupon code.
For those who may be ordering... These will be the latest maps DeLorme has to offer. Some of the copyright dates may be a few years back. I suppose they don't update every map every year and I can understand why - roads in the back country don't change often.

They really have it in for us Canadians. I almost pulled the trigger on that offer but $59.00 for shipping and handling was a definite deal breaker.

There are some Canadians on our Boondocking Trips. If you know any, have it shipped to me and I will drop it off in their care. They can use it, mark it up and use it to wipe the floor. But... save you some money.
If possible... contact me at boondockingairstream@gmail.com.

Post #2- nvestysly found the coupon and posted it on a Boondocking Thread I was following.
I just saw it as a great opportunity, since I paid $20 each for mine over the years.
Post #3- these would also do the job.
I have found that in addition to the maps are the pages in front listing information that will be at your finger tips as to National and State Parks, geography information, and major camp sites to visit.
Many of the maps having BLM and National Forests will have camp sites marked. For each one on a map, more exist that are not shown. Once you have a map, you have been given the key to wander at will.

Mapped out . . .
Thank you to nvestysly for discovering, and to Ray for conspicuously posting, the 50% off coupon for the DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteers. This morning I purchased Atlases for the 11 remaining Western States for which I don't yet have a DeLorme. When they arrive in 5 to 11 days, I'll have many, many more places to travel to. My hope is that each one becomes dog-eared and extensively marked up over the next two decades. Tally-Ho!

The 50% off coupon still works. If anyone needs to begin (or add to) their collection you can save some money.

Compared to my older Delorme Atlas's, the newer editions have more detail. Since I have written notes in the blank spaces around each page of my older editions, and mark our Base Camp sites over the years... I will have to stick with my older editions.
I believe that Delorme is fighting the electronic map versions with reduced sales and found it best to sell what inventory they have on hand, now... rather than no sales. At least if the batteries go dead in your GPS unit... paper does has its advantages.

I love maps so I bit the bullet and ordered the boxed set of the entire US. Pretty pricey, but I'll tell my kids they don't need to send me a joint Father's Day gift for the next couple of years. It's coming out of their inheritance. The coupon only gave me a third off on the set.

Like a Timex... It Still Works
After returning from the Wyoming rockdocking trip it was apparent I/we needed maps for additional states we plan to visit. I ordered Gazeteers from DeLorme and the coupon code still works!
The coupon can be found at:
http://www.retailmenot.com/view/delorme.com
The products have to be ordered directly from DeLorme. The maps I purchased varied in price from just under $20 to nearly $30 and the coupon code subtracted 50% on each item.
The boxed sets are reduced price to start with so the coupon code only subtracts 25 - 30%.
You still have to pay S&H and tax but if you're buying more than one atlas the coupon racks up savings quickly.

DeLorme 'Old and New' Atlases no longer correlate
DeLorme has some smart staff on the 'new DeLorme' Atlases being offered.
The National Forest, BLM, School Sections and National Parks on the new printings are not distinct as they only color the boundaries. The detail is sharper. GPS grids. The older versions may have coordinates and later editions with coordinates and GPS grids.
The slickest change made are the page numbers. The older editions pagination index are no longer used in the newest editions. So if I were to ask you to go to page 49... the new edition is not MY page 49. Several of us discovered this on the Wyoming Adventure when I said 'you cannot miss it' on page 49 6B. The index and pages have been flipped so an old edition and the new edition are no longer compatible. You could be in the middle of a Lake with the new edition.
Both the older and newer editions are great references. Just no longer compatible for indexing between the two to coordinate locations.
There are of course more detailed maps for Off the Grid roads and potential campsites. I have BOXES of maps from US Geological Survey, National Forest Service, National Grasslands, National Historic maps like the Oregon Trail and the Quadrangles for convenient detailed coverage. I like the elevation contours so a route can be chosen with ease. Few maps go that far as the cost 'use to be' prohibitive.
Some of my maps are from the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. I may have thousands of these with Geological Survey stratigraphy, mineral deposits, mining areas and surveys.
The State Highway maps are intended to help travelers find the major routes within any State. These others... are for those, like myself, who find getting to a small pin point location without needing a tow truck to pull me out of a sand dune... or mud pit.

Thanks Ray for the clarifications. Aren't old topo maps great? Many times there are structures shown, the foundations of which are still there in the ground. Unfortunately reading maps esp. topo information is a dying art.
