Colorado Camping

We are planning a camping trip to CO later this summer. Our go-to campground is South Mineral just outside of Silverton, but we are open to suggestions. We want higher elevation (over 8000'), trees and preferably water of some sort (river, lake, etc). We will likely be boondocking. Anybody have recommendations? Preferably the south/southwest area of the state, as we will be driving from TX. Also does anyone know how far south the pine beetle infestation has moved?

It all kind of depends on what kind of RVing experience you're looking for. Boondockers will have a very different array of possibilities than are available to folks who want hookups. Not necessarily a better array or even a larger one; just a very, very different one.

Hey Texasmommy,
We stayed at Molas lake, a campground run by the city of Silverton. It was wonderful. 10,000ft elevation, a small alpine lake with water available -perfect. Try it.

We recently stayed at O'Haver lake. The location has no electrical hookups, no dump station but potable water on site. It is definitely a campground - so I'm not sure if it meets your boondocking criteria - but it is beautiful.

Like the Texan, we to are heading to Colorado but in mid September. Looks like we might have to stop at O'Haver lake. Looks great....is it pet friendly?

Yes, O'Haver Lake is pet friendly - we had our dog and two cats at the campground. One couple seemed two walk their two corgis around the campground about ten times a day.

We stayed mineral creek for 11 nights 30s in the morning and 75 in the day, The solar panel kept up the power just fine. Although we never used the furnace I observed that the battery power dropped 25% at night

Silverton is currently a mess. The years of mining the locals turned down being a superfund cleanup site has finally bubbled over.

Some alternatives:
Great Sand Dunes
Zapata Falls
Navajo Lake

The Silverton leaders reasoning is similar to Amity Island major in the movie Jaws.

It was actually our own USA EPA that blew out the mine plug. It a bigger superfund site now. It will take years for the Las Animas river basin to recover. I really liked this area.

The news coverage is killing the Silverton/Durango area. I live on the Animas River and am president of the ditch company. It is currently clear and and an hour ago, EPA contractors checked both of my wells and the ph was neutral on a well that is 150 yards from the river bank. The very subject of the nrgtrakr post is why the residents of Silverton have passed on the Superfund. It is a tourist killer. What you didn't hear on the news over the past 4 days is that Fish & Game put 108 trout fingerlings in four locations and 107 survived. Because of the volume of cancellations, there are plenty of spots available! BTW, Navajo lake splits the Colorado/New Mexico boundary and the Colorado side is superior. If you love the desert, the Great Sand Dunes is great. No shade and plenty of sand.

Coaster,

That looks like an amazing spot to park an Airstream. Thanks for the pic.

The Sand Dunes has trees.

It would be beneficial to read multiple sources about the Silverton area - some of them don't tell the whole story.

The state has now approved Durango to start adding Animas water to the city water supply.

Gov. Hickenlooper drank a bottle right from the river after sterilizing with an iodine pill.

Animas river looks clean, PH and all metal levels are now normal.

So if you are planning on traveling to Durango or Silverton area, go ahead the Animas will be fine and things will be back to normal soon.

The long range effects are unknown but most think it will not be a major problem.

If you go North; we lived in Ft Collins between 1999-2003. Maybe some other members can give us an update on the status of these areas now?

We tent camped, no AS.

Most often at Red Feather Lakes

And up on the West side of Rocky Mountain National Park

One of our favorites was up North of Steamboat Springs CO on Steamboat Lake.

This was our view from the campsite, to the West.

To the East.

This wasn't Steamboat, but a lake nearby, I can't remember its name right at the momen.

We also camped down by
Pagosa Springs
Durango
Great Sand Dunes

I can't find pictures right now.

FWIW, Larimer County has an Airstream you can rent while staying in that park.
Horsetooth Resevoir -- Airstream Trailer

I can't wait to get my recently acquired AS usable and make some new memories.
