I think a US firm tried to make them but the unions forced them to go to China. I think Wisconsin is going to import Chinese teachers pretty soon. Maybe those kids will finally learn how to read. Sorry, chased a rabbit there.

Not to worry--when they come running at us with their sharpened shovels we can shoot 'em with the AK-47s they sold us last year!

Vietnam era US entrenching tool(w/pick) is a great piece of gear. Used my in and out of the Army. Used the Glock entrenching tool and it cracked by the pivot point while on OEF.
Glock set me a new one. Still have my old Army 'E' tool, keep it in the truck.
Vietnam US Army M1943 Entrenching Tool w/Cover 1968 | Vietnam Militaria. Never liked the new folding 'E' tool.
Leave the ChiCom products to others. Buy American or from an allied nation.

I carry one of the M1943 E tools--bought from a surplus store when I was a kid--in my car. Built a lot better than most of the look-alike junk commonly seen today. Glad to hear you can still get them. I haven't seen one in a surplus store in a long time.

The "Swiss Army knife" allusion is interesting because I also have a surplus Swiss E tool in my truck. It's copied from the WW II Wehrmacht E tool, which has a fixed blade. Also sharpened on all edges, which is handy for hacking roots. In the war they were usually kept filed very sharp, for use as a hacking weapon in close quarters combat. (War is a nasty business.)

While I am definately with you on buying US, problem is that there are very few US made stuff anymore. It is a sad thing, but it is what it is. I always look at Made in USA, Made in America, US, American-Made before I buy anything.

I just carry a long-handle shovel in the truck. I am not going to be climbing cliffs and making hobo meals with a shovel if I am camping with a trailer.

If I were backpacking or serving in Afghanistan again, then this would be an idea.

only those who have "been there" will appreciate this

I am sure it can do all the same things as a shovel tool. ....or at least tried.
You would not believe the stories .....if you ever wore dog tags you had a P-38.

Hey, I used to have one of those, and I never figured out what it was! I wonder if I can still find it...

That is the best thing I was ever issued! I got a four day pass one time for knowing why there was a hole in it! I still have my P-38 I swiped from my ALSE guy when he wasn't looking! I prefer the American E-tool to the Chinese piece of dung. I've done some damage with my E-tool back in the day....

P-38 can opener

Yeah, I bought a dozen one time and keep some handy in the trailer. One hung on a handle of the cooler with a loop of bead chain. The neat thing about those babies is they will open any can. (Although the can opener blade of my Swiss Army knife will, too.)

Here's a shovel that is American made. I don't know how it works but it sure looks wicked.

I was introduced to the P-38 when working on a forest fire fighting supply crew in Alaska in 1971. One should be in the Smithsonian.

Not from here, so don't understand the idea of countries and borders. Very hard to tell all you people apart. You are so happy and similar.

But I must say, it seems to me that a mini-shovel that does dig-grapple-shield-chop-saw-cut is superior to open-food-can tool anyday.

I tried digging a trench with a P-38 once and it didn't work too well, my friend Jose Cuervo was with me but he didn't help much.

I have found that Jose is of little or no help with any project. He's just nice to have around.

Although an emigrant to this country, Jose has become quite popular and earned many honors. There is even a line in the nation anthem about him:

"Jose, can you see?"

Here is a song written by a friend of his.

watched the video - was semi-impressed. there was no real continuity of use.

just wonder how many tools were used/injured in the making of the video.

in my experience with certain overseas items, it seems that after the first few
(or single?) uses the item breaks, leaks, cracks, falls apart, plays dead, etc.

Jose' is a good friend, and I like Margaritas as well as the next guy, but when I learned that tequila is fermented by a bacteria rather than a good, honest, yeast I never felt quite the same about it. . . For bulk consumption I'll stick to gin 'n tonics.
