Cheap or Free in Florida

We have recently stayed at a number of these campgrounds, so most info should be reliable. Things do change so verify. Enjoy!

My current list for Florida part "A"

Apalachicola near: Panama City - Free, # of Campsites: Unknown Max Stay: Unknown RoadPaved Scenery Rating:4 out of 5, Noise Level:2 out of 5 Open Year round.Drycamp under the bay bridge at the marina. Good shrimp! Great view ofwater.

Apalachicola, town of SUMATRA: a little north of Apalachicola in Apalachicola NF has many free CGs. WrightLake on SH-65 about 2 mi S. of Sumatra has a CG host, beach, & level parking under high trees that is accessible to big rigs. Apalachicola National Forest Wright Lake campground was inexpensive ($8, half for golden age)

BlackwaterRiverState Forrest (see Milton northeast of Pensacola) in the panhandle. They offer RV camping in a couple of different areas. I believe one area is considered "improved" & others are "unimproved". It seemed serene & lovely, especially by BearLake. Only a few RV camping areas are offered by the FloridaStateForest system but they are typically less crowded than the State Parks. Their web site is

BRADENTON(south of Tampa): O/N at the Cracker Barrel Restaurant
636 67th Street Cir E, Bradenton, FL

BUSHNELL:40 miles south of Ocala on I-75 Red Barn Campground, 5923 S.W. 20th Dr. 904-793-6065. From jct I-75 & SR-48, take Exit 63, then go east 1/4 mi on SR-48.

No Elec., NoShowers in Restrooms, Water available, Dump Station, VisitorCenter
St. Lucie Lock Take exit 102 on IH-95 & go west ½ mile. From Stuart, 6 mi S on US 1, off FL 76. This is a beautifully kept campground w/ room for 9 RV's. Sites 1-3 are right on the canal connecting the Atlantic to Lake Okeechobee where you can watch wildlife & boats come & go. Campsites w/ & w/o Elec., Showers, Restrooms, Drinking Water, Dump Station, Picnic/Day Use,Launch Ramp, Visitor Center, About $20 per night, half w/ Golden Age pass. Great place! Also see PhippsCountyPark below! They are next door neighbors.
Moore Haven Lock From Miami, 130 mi N on US 27 to Moore Haven. Campsites w/ & w/o Elec., Showers, Restrooms, Drinking Water, Dump Station, Launch Ramp, Marina
Ortona Lock (See also La Belle) From Ft. Myers, 33 mi E on FL 80, paved road to lock, Campsites w/ Elec.,Showers, Restrooms, Drinking Water, Dump Station.Picnic/Day Use OK, Launch Ramp in North park only. North Park accessible from SR78 in LaBelle, picnicking free, fee for boat ramp use.

CHIEFLAND On Highway 19 (about 22 miles northeast from Cedar Key) going south about mid-town, on the west side of the road is the Chiefland Farmers & Flea Market & the campground is just south of the Flea Market. The campground charges $10 for overnight w/ hookups & the place is not bad. There are restrooms & showers.

CrystalRiver: WalMarts in Crystal River & Port Richey allow o/n. Both are on RT 19.

HOMESTEAD: EvergladesNational Park, 4000l State Road 9336 There are two campgrounds, Long Pine Key Campground & Flamingo Campground. Between the two there are nearly 350 sites. There is a dump station & locations to take on water, but no Elec.. Fee is $14 per night or $7 w/ Golden Age Pass.

JASPER, FL. Gibson Park 8 miles south of Georgia state line on I-75 30 miles north of I-10 Gibson Park, on the banks of Suwannee River, offers rustic camping or RV hookups, fishing / canoeing. Free Campground., from I-75 take Florida State Road 6 west 3 miles to Hamilton County Road 751. Go south 4 miles to the SuwanneeRiver. Campground is on the right just "BEFORE" crossing the SuwanneeRiver. Register at the Agricultural inspection station directly across the road. Max stay: 10 days. "AG" station is manned 24/7 so there is security & phone. There is also a large conservation area within a short bike ride. Cost is around $6 a night if you plug into the 30 amp service. Nicest "Free" real campground in the area.

KEY LARGO: Am Legion Post 333 at mile marker 99.5. Boondocking. Phone 451-1986.

KEYS: Along Hwy 1 to Key West, at rare intervals the ocean is accessible. Just past Islamorada the Hwy 1 crosses a bridge to Tea Table Key, then another bridge to Indian Key Fill. On Indian Key Fill, there's a grassy area on the south side of the road extending to the seas edge. Garbage cans are provided. No other facilities. Camping is technically illegal, but during peak season (hotels & campgrounds are full) the rule against overnight parking is less enforced. Unconfirmed info!

KEY WEST: Moose Lodge 1760 at 700 Eisenhauer Dr. Boondocking. Serves meals.

La Belle: 24 miles east of Fort Myers. The South Ortona Lock campground is open. Water supply is good. These COE campgrounds have 12 sites each on river.

LIVE OAK/BRANFORD: near the intersection of I-10 & I-75 For boondockers. Between Alabama's Rainbow Plantation & Zolfo Springs Resort. Right on SuwanneeRiver, S of McAlpin on HWY-129. Free 1 night,

Cost: $10 or less, 30 Campsites, Max stay: 14 days, paved road, Scenery 5 out of 5, Noise 2 out of 5, Amenities: Water, Electric, washer & dryer, Dump Station, Restrooms. Year Round This campground is on Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway canal that runs across Florida. Nice, clean, quiet, shaded, plenty of room & the price is right. Campsites were right on the canal which looks like a river. Blacktop roads & graveled sites.

Phipps County Park 40 miles north of West Palm Beach. 2175 SW Locks Road, Stuart. ALWAYS campsites available. Directions: On IH-95 take exit 102 & go west ½ mile then turn north on Locks Road. From Stuart, go west on US 76, cross under I-95, cross over the Florida Turnpike, take the second right (north) on SW Locks Road to the county park sign on the right. It's a short dirt road to the gated entrance. There are 48 campsites, some w/ tables, unhook, set up & pay the Ranger when his office opens. No Elec.. Cost is $10 / water, dump station, bathrooms & a view of yachts on the intracoastal waterway. We stayed 4 nights here & found it quite pleasant. It is a bargain for $10 per night.

Nearby (1/4 mile) is the St. Lucie Lock. At the COE Lock, there are 9 RV sites, 12 boat slips & 3 tent sites. Reservations suggested for RV sites but while we were there in December, there were empty sites. Tenters can usually get a site any time. See Corps of Engineers listings.

Port Richey: WalMarts in Port Richey allows o/n. On RT 19.

Sanibel Island Dayparking just south of Pine Island Ft. Myers, There is a small park which allows free stays during the day. It is located just before the toll plaza to Sanibel Island. I have known people who get there at 7:00 AM & stay until 4 PM & then move away (as to a Wal*Mart) for the evening, & return the next day. You could not buy such a spot.
Shell Mound Park near Cedar Key(70 miles west of Ocala): A Indian mound & nature trail off Highway 347 on CR 326 outside Cedar Key, right on the coast, w/ camping, boat ramp, & picnicking. Description from Cedar Key website: Park is off the beaten track, surrounded by Suwannee Wildlife Refuge. Shell Mound has 24 RV sites w/ water & Elec., plus 6 sites more sites for tents. We found everything clean. In summer it is called Sand Flea Lagoon because of the sand fleas. The shell mound itself is mostly shells that covers 5 acres & is up to 20 feet high. The cost for rv & 2 people is $5.00.

SOPCHOPPY: (Panhandle Area) City park w/water & elec, dump. Boat ramp, fire rings, grills, toilets. Attendant on duty. $5 w/hookups. Watch for low elec wires! HWY-98 to 319S. At SopchoppyCityPark sign, take right (Shelton St), go 0.4 mi to Park Ave, take left (Gravel rd) 0.5 mi to city park.

SilverLake. A couple miles east of Leesburg (near Ocala) The camping area has a bathroom building on a knoll overlooking the parking lot for boaters. That description isn't much to go on, but we had no trouble finding it the first time.

St. PetersburgEgmont Key On the southeast tip of the St. Petersburg peninsula. From I-275 south, Merge onto FL-682 W via EXIT 17 toward Pinellas Bayway – St. PetersburgBeach. Camping is no longer allowed on Tierra Verde. Continue done Pinellas Bayway to FortDesoto. FortDesoto goto Tierra Verde On the southeast tip of the St. Petersburg peninsula Large campground, hookups, County park, $28/night

The are three LeonCounty parks (fish camps - free) near Tallahassee along Route 20 east of Blountstown. Two didn't make our list as "keepers." We didn't stay at either of them. The third one is well marked. It's near SilverLake. The camping area has a bathroom building on a knoll overlooking the parking lot for boaters. That description isn't much to go on, but we had no trouble finding it the first time.
There is an easy to find campground in St. Marks on US 98 south of Tallahassee at ApalacheeBay. The St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is across the street. The second time we stayed there, it was a mess w/ the new bridge being built. This campground has "tiny" sites for 16' trailers.

TALLAHASSEE: the Big Rest area on I-10 west of Tallahassee about 45 to 60 miles on the south side of the Interstate.

TAMPA O/N Camping World just east of Tampa in I-4 At Seffner, FL.

Thanks Bob,
Your two posts "Cheap or Free in Florida" and "Cheap or Free Dump Stations - Florida" are very helpful for those of us who enjoy exploring the nooks and crannies in Florida.

Like you, we found the sites at St. Marks too tiny for our rig, but no one hassled us when we backed into a large open grassy area for the night. No other RVers were there, nor was a caretaker; so the next morning, we collected litter and raked up several sites as payment for parking overnight. It never hurts to act like we're in charge of taking care of a place - even though we're just passing through. <grin>

couple of spots to look at

Midway off of 41 in southern Florida. Now has E, central water and
a dump station. Also the Travel Centers of America across from the
Flying J in Seffer, it has a dump station. The casino down on 41
before you take a right towards the Keys. The Camping World in North
Fort Myers.

Hi HappyJoe, I mentioned Midway in the front of Part "B", and it once was a no fee campground. I was surprised to see it had been converted to a "fee" area. Last time we were in that area, we tried the Bear Lake Campground and it was fantastic and free although it had no utilities except for portapotties and dumpster for trash. RV's park in the grassy area surrounding a 30 acre lake. Great Place!

Yes. It went to this new system about a year ago. However, off
of 41, there are two campgrounds that stille have boondocking.
As you drive 41 east, close to the Indian nation building you take
a right & go out there a short way and you see then a mile of so
the other.
This past winter, the word was that Burns was going to go that
way, but I haven't heard if it has?

Where the volunteers for the National Park has their campground
is a dump also. Nice set-up to it, easy in and out.

I see all these campgrounds listed for the panhandle of Florida. Mystic Springs in McDavid is an Airsteam Park. $9.00 a night for full hookups. Or you can stay at the boat ramp 1/4 mile down the road for free.

Quail Run RV park in Wesley Chapel, just north of Tampa is very nice, they just added another 100 plus spaces.

We stayed there for a year and had no problems, free wifi and basic cable.

When people lie to you, and refuse to honor their word, don't regret trying to follow a dream, new adventures and friends await you.

Thanks for the list Bob - I'll keep this handy, going down in April.

I can vouch for Fort DeSoto - great sites for the most part. Extremely windy waterfront sites, especially at night.

UPDATE: Our recent trip to Florida provided a couple revisions to the list, plus additions. Enjoy!

Apalachacola: Overnighting under the Bay Bridge is still available and free! There is a sign which directs overnighters to contact the Marina Manager, but it usually goes to an answering machine. Most RV's park in the grassy area along the shore. We thought the highway traffic on the bridge would be noisy but are happy to report it was not an issue. Good Boondocking! Room for many rigs.

JASPER, FL. Gibson Park: Several changes by the county have taken place. The park is no longer associated with the Ag Station. There are about 9 sites with hookups for about $16 per night. We were allowed to "dry camp" in the large overflow parking field for $10, but dry camping is at the discretion of the Camp Host.

PHIPPS Park, Stuart: Phipps Park now has 9 sites with water/elec. for about $21/night and they still have about 30 dry camping sites for about $16 per night.

BILL FREDERIC PARK at Turkey Lake, Orlando: 3401 Hiawassee Road, Orlando, This is a great find. Park with 300 acres located about 2 miles from Universal Studios, has about 50 spaces with hookups for about $18 per night! Also has a large field for dry camping / overflow for $10 per night. Dump and restrooms provided. Great park and really convenient to theme parks.
