The manufacturer specifically mentions not touching. This includes brushing vacuuming or knocking. I guess all these remove the Platinum on the pad. My Olympic is uncovered and more than 21 years old. Still hot as hell. Will keep our 34 very comfortable. Not sure if the pad is dead but why mess with something working? From what I understand it is more than $150 to have it updated not to mention you have to ship the whole unit back.... that equalls a big hole in the wall and the cost of shipping each way!
We love ours and use it for weeks on end. An endless breeze helps move warm air around too.

Wow this forum got me worried. What condition is my 10year old Wave 6 in??
We plan to take a extended trip soon and will need it. So went out and fired it up
on high yesterday, seems as good as new, no propane smell, no smell at all.
We have always had it covered. Thought, we have a electrostatic duster, wonder if that would work, need not touch the surface. Got it a Walmart some time ago.

My opinion: If it was mine and working ok I would not mess with it.

We used to have a 1986 Bigfoot "Spirit Wing" 19 foot trailer. The original owner ordered it with an Olympian heater. Once we figured out how to use it, we never used the Atwood furnace again and slept in peace every time. It was 25 years old when we sold it and the heater worked just fine. It was always covered when not in use and although the cover was a bit worn, the heater itself looked new. I'd put one in my motorhome if I had a free wall with enough space to mount it on.

Geez...I'm glad I didn't know that mine is well passed it's life span...otherwise I'd be critical of the great job it does warming us up...

Seriously, we keep ours covered and it was installed by some PO of our '91 in the trailers history, works great. We will be installing one in our '63 before long
