Camp Hale area

Any suggestions on a good boondocking sight at or around Camp Hale? Apparently, there's a campground there, but I have no experience with it...and don't really need it. I'll be there Tuesday and Wednesday nights (5/29 & 30). I'm pulling a Bambi with an F150 4x4. I'm hoping to do some mt biking, but because all trails from that valley go up, I think the snow will be an issue. I may have to head to Buena Vista. Thanks in advance for any replies. - Roy

Half Moon Creek

Roy,

A beautiful site for Boondocking is the National Forest along Half Moon Creek just south of Leadville. There are two designated campgrounds along the creek but the National Forest on both sides of the road is available for camping.

We used to go camping there all of the time when I was a kid.

This spot is great when there aren't a million ATV's screaming around. It is easily accessable from the highway, and was easy enough to get a bambi into and turned around in. It is also right on two creeks.

You can also try heading around the hill to the back side of the creek to
this one. I've never camped there, but it looked easy enough to get a trailer into and the road is not to hard to get into. The are also some spots at the north end of the complex near some old barracks foundations that should allow you to cozy into a spot right next to the creek. Not sure how much snow (if any) remains.

Have fun! I love Camp Hale!

PS - Stay away from the campground. It ain't anything special. Plenty of free parking on the north side and in the middle
