National Forest FEE sites to be scheduled... Base Camp

There is some opportunity here to make the best of a best situation.

I am looking into some Forest Service Camp Sites with pit toilets and some with well water pumps. Colorado "water". Closely related to the old Coors beer Mountain Spring Water, which Coors does not use today. So budget for that. The Fee area... not the beer.

Senior Pass card gets 50% off for being Old. I am pretty sure that applies to all National Forest sites. Age: 62 years young. The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass... You figure out where to pick one up, if you do not have one already.

There will be also possible opportunities for those wanting to camp at a Fee Camp Site for one or two trailers at a time along a River. Fishing is optional.

These options are for those who found themselves quick learners and want to step it up a notch. My philosophy... why not? I will also drive ahead and find the pull out, size it up, help you find an available spot and how to set up Base Camp. I expect these to be Fee sites, but the price is worth it.

My Lodgepole pine tree is leaning towards: June 13 Monday to June 17 Friday, 2016. Leaving at 9AM, or earlier if everyone is accounted for, on June 13th. For those who want to park on my street... I will be emailing the address before June 13th. Come Sunday the 12th. Leave Monday AM. I live in the County and the neighbors are use to weird things happening.

By April 1st, no fooling, I will make it 100% final. Although this is a pending date, it has some advantages.

- It is BEFORE the 4th of July three day holiday.

- It is late enough in the season where the days will be nice and warm, cool nights.

- School vacation is not in Full Swing. If at all, here...

- Monday.... people who work for a living are back to work, after the weekend clogging up the camp sites. Those who wish they could do what you are doing on this trip.

- This is Colorado. People come here on purpose. Locals like it here, even more. You have to think fast on your feet, grab the good vacant camp sites and wave as everyone else is driving around and end up camped next to the dumpster downwind from us.

- If everything goes well, something must have gone wrong. So, prepare for the worst experience of your life... and settle for something in between.

I have my special card...issued for passing 'a certain age'. Do we need to bring quarters, dollar bill, check books, credit cards...or all of the above?

NY24, Thank you for the suggestion. I will check into it.
This weekend I had my husband check out the trailer to see what repairs would have to be done before taking her on another trip. Hopefully she will be repaired in time to go on the Wyoming trip. If not, sleeping in the suv will be on the agenda.
In order to practice backing up I do have a flatbed trailer that I can hitch up and practice on. I have already towed the trailer so I have experience with that, just didn't have any need to back her up on that trip.
I have ordered my atlas and am studying up on rocks and geology so that I will have some base information.
I know time will go fast and yet seem like it is taking forever. When looking forward to trips that is just how it goes. Looking forward to hearing the tales from the greenhorn clinic.

Kathy

Greenhorns are everywhere....

#14- Emily & Sue
#15- Barrett

Now 19 dogs, 17 human beings.

Sorry human beings, you are now out numbered and out voted. Play time for dogs will probably need to be added to the schedule. Or... maybe the Dog Whisperer will need to keep this pack calm and obedient. For calming the Human Beings...

The dogs will be having their own Greenhorn gathering in the streams and then roll in the dust to dry off. Bring some old towels.

Decembergal is planning ahead for the rocks. There are some mining towns in this part of Colorado. Destination to be named the minute before we depart Castle Rock.

Castle Rock has its name from an isolated section of a flat topped mesa in town. Castle Rock. There is a parking lot and trail to hike around it. You can also climb Castle Rock from the east side. On top you can get a wonderful view of... Castle Rock, the town and Castle Rock... the mesa. There is a ladder chained to the Xmas Star on the north end. Bring a camera.

The ladder is for changing light bulbs, not to climb back down.

To get back down, do the reverse of climbing up. Usually there are young kids who climb this a lot. Ask them to show you how to get down the... easy way, one step at a time.

The hard way is falling down.

Can you PM me and let me know if you are traveling by yourself and if you live close to me? I live in Nebraka. Just looking for a companion who wouldn’t mind meeting up with a newbie Airstreamer once in a while. Can’t wait to hook up with Ray and his wife to learn more!

Well... here are a couple Survival Tips for those who actually show up...

Fill your Fresh Water Tank before we leave. Just in case. Sounds like you might be able to use a plastic jug and use local spring water. Your choice. Your issue.

Tires: Inflate not only those on the ground... but check the Spare Tire.

Bring a light weight water hose. How long? Only as long as you need...

Extension cord... How long? See... you are already catching on.

Flash Light. The brighter the better. For guys... that 1000 lumen is a whopper!

DOGS- wear handkerchiefs while Boondocking

Dogs... in the forest and the prairie look like Coyotes.

Dogs... on this trip could look like, Coyotes.

Some people shoot Coyotes as varmints. Sheepherders, Ranchers and Varmint Hunters, alike. This is not the city, where Coyotes live on cats and small pets and are safe to run where they please.

Bring a brightly colored scarf or handkerchief to tie around your dog's neck. We carry few with us. Dogs and Handkerchiefs. Why?

Coyotes do not wear colorful scarfs or handkerchiefs. There will be no confusion to recognize YOUR DOG and anyone out in the "bush" will know the difference.

If you believe that tying a scarf around your dog is not eco-friendly. Then, maybe you ought to wear the scarf, while running with your dog through the woods. This could be the most important lesson you will learn about Boondocking. Do not wear antlers...

Ranchers some times will use a washable spray paint... saying Horse, Cow... during Elk Season. Think I am kidding?
