Boondocking near Glacier National Park

Hello to all! We are finally getting our little Bambi ready to travel. Have gotten such great advise here and need more! We are meeting up with some of our BC friends in late June. They would like to stay up near/at Glacier National Park and somewhere off the beaten path would be preferable to them. Since we are new to this, I couldn't think of a better place to go for advise/info on places we can pull up for 3-4 days...quiet, no crowds, scenic, etc and no power but still driving distance to the Going to the Sun Road.

Thanks for any and all guidance out there!

Wando1977... I hate to be the bearer of not the best news for Northwest Montana boondocking... difficult to find.

The lower elevations and higher precipitation to the south and west of Glacier National Park is BRUSHY where there are no TREES, and where there are no TREES... there are few places to pull into. We have camped on mine tailings or along the west side of the Flathead Lake at the State Campgrounds which are nice. Your choices are camped along the brush on a gravel road meant for lumber trucks to roar up and down OR a commercial RV Park that has open space available.

Now... heading to Yellowstone you are in High Country and the brush thins out among the trees. Many hunter campsites along flowing creeks. Just finding them takes some patience.

I know this is late for your needs, but others might have been curious. Idaho opens up nicely as some areas have less rainfall, but finding something flat is another situation.

In the late summer... do not camp next to any "berry" bushes. You will have "large visitors" thinking you are picking their winter food.

Just stay in the park itself. None of the sites have any hookups (my definition of boon docking). If you want the most primitive campsites, the ones on the North West side (Logging Creek, Quartz creek, Bowman Lake, and Kintla Lake) are the most unused and un visited. On the west side, Cut Bank campground is also quiet and primitive. But in Late June, all of the campgrounds will be essentially reasonably quiet and good.

Be aware that the Going to the Sun highway opens when they get the snow cleared, and that is often after the 20 th of June or later. Construction on the East side of the Sun highway may keep it closed longer.
