Boondocking in Moab, UT
Hi,
Heading to Moab this weekend and have stayed at Sands Flats Recreation Area in the past and enjoyed it very much. Wondering what other site are around that area that we might try? Not into RV parks where RVs are parked next to each other but nice campgrounds are just fine. Don't need any services.

South of Moab is Canyonland National Park and known for great boondocking sites. You'll need a government map of the campground sites.

(Just noticed your date-- hope you had a great trip, but for anyone else with similar interests....)
I think RV camping is pretty controlled in Canyonlands, but there is quite a lot of dispersed camping allowed in adjacent BLM lands. On a busy weekend (or teachers' convention week) these get pretty crowded. Ditto for BLM primitive campgrounds along the Colorado River, Ken's Lake south of town, and at Horse Thief CG near Dead Horse Point State Park. Do check ahead on conditions of any dirt roads, as wash-outs and deep ruts are common, and road-grading doesn't happen every year. People familiar with local conditions are in the BLM Moab field office, and the town of Moab's information center.

I will second Horsethieves BLM area. I think it is 12 miles from the main road to Moab on the way to Canyonlands NP. You only have to go less than half a mile down a dirt road to access it.

We just returned from our trip! Thank you for all the responses! We started at Dead Horse Point State Park as we were lucky to reserve two consecutive days just a week in advance. That place was great and our site was fantastic! From there, we went into Moab and stayed at Sands Flats Recreational Area. We rented a side-by-side and had a ball there! Our final Utah destination was BLM land just outside Goblin Valley State Park. While the campsite was nothing special, the state park was Fun.

We just returned from Moab too and stayed at the BLM Goose Island campground, which is the first one along highway 128 as you leave Moab and head north along the Colorado River. These are first-come, first-served campsites. Our campsite backed right up to the Colorado River and the red Wingate cliffs of Arches National Park.
It's not exactly boondocking, but it is dry camping for $15/night in an established campground. We liked that we could bike directly into Moab using the bike path that extends from the campground.
Here's a photo of our Airstream in the Goose Island Campground:

I love this forum
We are renovating a 1988 Argosy 29' and plan to head out to FT 1st of July. Moab is on our fall list and I was just looking at BLM camping today so love that I can come here and get direct info.
On top of this - we have a question about your solar panel ~ care to share briefly how it works/how much power you get from it?
Thanks so much for sharing about your trip.

I assume you are asking RVhive, but we too have a portable unit like that. We own a 200 watt Zamp suitcase setup that consists of 2 panels and a controller. We have a 2017 FC and it has the Zamp (SAE) port on the front of the trailer that we plug the panels into. Alternatively, you can just clamp the leads to the battery terminals. You can expect a max output of about 6 amps when things are perfect from each 100 watts. Hope this helps!
