As a boy scout leader and a teacher of leave no trace. We teach the boys leave the camp ground as if we never camped there. Since I don't take my trailer with when I am with the scouts so we do have to dump our gray water out but we do filter it. We teach them to strain dishwater through a small strainer or bandanna. Put the food particles in a seal able plastic bag and pack them out. Broadcast the strained dishwater over a wide area at least 200 feet from the nearest water source, campsite, or trail. Scattering dishwater in a sunny area will cause the water to evaporate quickly, causing minimal impact. WE need to keep our camp grounds clean so everyone to use.

Don't know for sure that this is relevant, but tests relied on by the NM and AZ environment departments indicate acceptable levels of coliform in gray water coming from residential bathroom sinks, showers and washers, but unacceptable levels from kitchen sinks. The speculation is that food scraps in traps may be the cause, but whatever the cause, both states permit limited use of gray water, but not from kitchen sinks, the gray from which, by law, must go (ultimately) to the sewer.

Lynn, its way to late in this thread to worry about relevance.

California being the "environmental", etc, etc, state that we are, this may come as a surprise to some.

Within the last year, we approved the dumping of grey water for residential users. There are, of course, regulations attached. The main one being that the discharge must be below ground, such as under mulch, etc.

It's amazing what a 3 year drought and the water conservation efforts will do to the paradigm of the regulators...

If you can eliminate soap scum it might work, I have found soap will form an impervious layer. Oh forgot grease will too so when you do dishes no grease or soap, grill all food and use paper plates might be the answer.
I have tried limiting the flow in the shower, reducing water usage for dishwashing by using soapy sponge rather than filling sink with water. Next step will be to pump grey to black tank as we seem to get a full grey tank twice as fast as black.
