As an Easterner, I'm still not at ease with just pulling off the road and camping, the way you can out West, but this is giving me encouragement for my next trip out there.
Pat
Hi folks: I lived in Virginia for 20 years and fished and hunted all over. You have the George Washington National forest that you can boon dock in. It is just huge and very primitive as well. Roaming those mountains I have come across old plantations that have gone into decay and old stone fences as well as the old Locust siz zag fences that seem to last forever. Lovely area and I miss it.
The only trouble with boon docking is you need some kind of activities to keep busy. I would get bored quickly and have to move on. Have you tried the beaches yet? Chincotique, Assatique, Cape Hatteras? Just great!!

What a great thread! We plan to take our first big trip with our 22' CCD this summer. After stopping at the Grand Canyon we plan to head into Colorado, with boondocking on the agenda. This thread will be a great resource.
If you come through South West CO and plan on making a stop at Mesa Verde National Park, a must see, feel free to give me a buzz. Basically I live in the front yard of the Park and "The Point" at the entrance is my view. I have ten wooded acres with plenty of space for multiple trailers. Y'all come!

Whew! I just sat through your whole slide show this morning. Wow! what an effort. Loved your home.
Wow, this whole thread just has my mouth watering. I wish the snow would stop so that I can go out and get back to work on our Airstream!!!

From one Gypsy with an Airstream to another, I just watched through your photos of your Earthship adventure-what a construction. What you have done is wholly new to me, but with recycling tires and cans, using dirt and rock, you've created a fascinating home with an incredible surrounding. Congratulations! I hope we get to "visit" with our Gypsy someday when we head for the Four Corners. Thanks for the slide show. ~G

WDCU. . .MALs no longer! What's a few miles among Airstream friends?
And maxandgeorgia, didn't know i was stealing your name! My home is called an earthship and you can see a whole community of them about 20 miles east of Taos, NM on the 64.
Lynn, you're nearby. Get that trailer ready and comeon by.

Enjoyed the pics; alas we are a 34ft. & long for such a trip.
Hi, we live in our AS full time or when we're off the driving freight road a few days a mo. I'm interested in getting a new clearcoat & am needy of information or advice. Thanks, PeasCarrots

You live in one of the earthships out by the gorge? Haven't been out there in a while, but I don't recall seeing an Airstream out there!
Anyway, we're thinking about visiting a couple of places we haven't been in several decades this year: Great Sand Dunes, *Black Canyon, Colorado National Monument. We went to Mesa Verde for a week on one of our vacations a couple of years ago!. (It's a wonderful place, particularly if you get to stay there and really study all of the available material and hike every site!) As usual, we'll end the vacation in Pagosa Spgs. There's something about a long, hot soak that is really refreshing at the tail end of a vacation just before coming back to work!
*Black Canyon. Actually, we've been there more recently, and a little more often, but it was always from the back side, not the national park side, where all the trails are. (My parents' ranch was closer to the other side.)
So now just to finish all the jobs on the Airstream: Finish the tail droop job, reinstall the bathroom, check water system for leaks and sanitize, check all power, replace two windows with REAL glass, repack wheel bearings, get two new tires, balance all tires and running gear. Shucks, once the snow stops, it shouldn't take more than a week. (He says.)

While Boondocking a few years back in the desert south of ELY, NV.
my late husband and I were awakened by our Kerry giving a little woof,
very unusual, but back to sleep and shortly after my husband was saying
Betty, what is that? I woke up and did not want to blink for missing
something.....We watched for at least 4 0r 5 min and then poof just
disappeared. Needless to say I was very upset and wanted to leave right
away. My husband was a pilot and we were not dreaming this up. We left
as it was breaking dawn. Called the Sheriff out of Vegas and they gave us
a tel # for Jack.....he told us that they had had other calls. This is a area
popular for folks to see ufo,s.... We are headed that way again on Wed. but
think we will go farther south and stay in the State park out of Caliente. We
have told other friends here about this and many travel that highway back
and forth to the desert (Palm Springs etc.) and some of them had some
interesting things to say as well. I would never travel it alone. Happy Trails
and keep on having fun, love to hear of great camp sites. Betty

No, I live across the street from Mesa Verde. Just pointing out to the others on this thread where to see more earthships in a group.

Go about 5 miles out of town to the west of Sedona, AZ. Turn north on a dusty RED road. Go around 6 miles.(it was very washboard the las time I was there). Sorry I don't have a pic at the moment. But you can image how great the view is. There is also a traihead to an Ancient Puebloan Ruin.
This spot is National Forest so you will need to go get a pass for $5. The Forest Service location is south of town just a couple of miles.

Here is the phoo I promised. Not that great a representation of the area, but you get the idea.

ummm..gypsy, that looks a little like the terrain from "The Hills Have Eyes"..
^^^^^. I don't think I'll let my son see that movie as there would be no boondocking for him in his future....had to see it though because of the 88 International that was in it...not for the faint of heart
