Are USB's in Sport hot with DC power when boon docking?
Hello All,
I just put a deposit down on a 2019 Sport 16'. It will come equipped with solar, however, my model does not have an inverter installed. Are the USB ports able to charge phones/ipads etc when not hooked up to city power or a generator?
Thanks

While I don't have any experience with the model you mention, I would be very surpised if you do not have power at the usb points.
what you wont likely have is 120v outlets without shore power.

Most Airstream trailers that have USB charge outlets have them powered off the 12 volt system. As long as you have battery use/store switch set to ‘use’ and your battery has power the outlets should work.

My Sport 22’ has power to the USB ports when the battery switch is on. Should be the same for you.

just picked up our '19 Sport 22. the USB is hot on battery and manages the phones just fine. that said, there may be a limit how much power is on the circuit. I tried to run my CPAP using a 12V adapter(12 V cigarette adapter to CPAP paired with a Female cigarette to USB to connect to AS). It powered on the device fine but power cut off when the CPAP was on. I was able to get the CPAP working using my portable 250W inverter, so I know a 12V DC solution can work. just not sure if the limit here was the AS USB or the USB to cigarette adapter I used.

A USB port is only good for an amp or two on a good day. Stepping the 5v USB up to 12v cuts that available current by 60% or more. In contrast a CPAP would likely need on the order of 3-5 amps at 12v.

Greetings,
I have a 2017 16ft Sport.
My usb’s have power while not using shore power.
In reference to a cpap, I don’t believe a standard usb has ability to run a cpap. In my sport, I added a 12 volt cigarette adapter, near fuse box, and purchased 12 volt cord for cpap, Amazon, that is made for my particular Cpap. I also replaced my stock battery with 2 six volt Trojan t125’s.
Safe Travels.

The typical robust USB provides 2.1 amps @ 5VDC
That is 10 watts. It is not much.
There is no way to step up direct current from 5V to 12V. Cars use ignition coils OK, but only for momentary impulses to fire sparkplugs.
Your CPAP likely runs on 12V direct current. See if you can get a source for 12VDC & cord for your CPAP. I made mine. When you use an inverter, it wastes about 20% of the electricity.
BTW a 250 watt inverter probably is a MSW inverter. That power may shorten the life of your CPAP. Was yours cheap? Mine wasn't. I would only use PSW inverter for a CPAP. Battery 12VDC should be OK.

CPAP Option
I have a FC 25RB, and replaced the bedside stand 12v USB outlet with a combined USB and 12v dual-socket combo - see the link below for the Marinco unit on Amazon (I hope this messages posts an active link - it shows it in the preview, but I'm still a newbie on Airforums ).
The the rig in "use" mode, the 12v socket enables my wife to run her CPAP when there's no shore power without having to run the inverter. Besides the breathing function, many CPAP machines have an integrated "humidifier" capability so the users nose/throat doesn't get so dried out. Vaporizing the water to humidify the CPAP air requires a lot of power. So, to use the 12v socket at lower wattage, hopefully you can disable the humidifier if you've got that feature.

These days there are all matter of solid state boost converters that can step up a lower voltage to a higher one. It’s just that a USB socket, as you mention, can’t provide enough current to run a CPAP.

Just install one of theses...easy to do. If in the bedroom, you will want one without a light.

My old CPAP ran on 12 volts. I ran it on the 12 volt system just fine. My new CPAP is 24 volts. I purchased a 12 volt to 24 volt supply and run the CPAP on the 12 volt system now also. I ran it on a small 110 inverter for a while before I got the 12 to 24 volt supply. I think there is no way a USB could power a CPAP. I looked at the small lithium battery options specifically for CPAP. An awful lot of expense for almost no power. The two big trailer batteries look like a much sounder option for me

I believe the limitation is the amount of current a USB can deliver. My CPAP draws 3.75 Amps at 24 Volts (90 Watts). At 12 Volts that would be 7.5 Amps. Most USB ports only supply a maximum of 2.5 Amps. I would look at tapping into the 12V wiring before the USB port and use a different plug for the CPAP, such as XT60 types.
