Here is a nice little free book that describes the pioneer trails that cross Wyoming some of which we will explore on our trip. https://www.nps.gov/cali/planyourvis...TRIG%20Web.pdf

Current count FYI...

Anyone who does not expect to take on the Wyoming Adventure, please decide soon. I have done my best to persuade those fence sitters that the 'worst is soon to come' once on this Adventure. Some of you may be stubborn and waiting until the last moment to cancel.

Current count stands at 19 from an original 21 members. The number of members does make a big difference, so the sooner you find a conflict of plans or health issues, it would be best to make a decision sooner, than later.

Currently #5 and #13 have cancelled.

As I have said a number of times... this is not a Disney Adventure with fake mountains, rivers, creeks, reptiles, mammals and paid escorts and guides. You will not only be where the Indians and Oregon Trail pioneers traveled... but 'living Indian and Pioneer' in the luxury of your trailers. What you bring with you is what you will have to work with, other than overwhelming some small grocery stores in towns you will remember after this Adventure.

The dusty hamlet of Jackson will be the only exception for overwhelming the populace. You need not feel intimidated while in Jackson after seeing the town. Just do not blink, they do have stop lights.

If your confidence is shaken, it ought to be. You will not be a Greenhorn Trailer Camper after two weeks, or less, of this brutal, dusty and with daily climate changes as we travel. Many of these camp sites you will visit again and again when in the area.

Dry heat one day and dry cool the next.

From my experience on the two earlier Adventures and cancellations just weeks before it begins, this will most likely be our last attempt to gather anything more than our two dogs, ourselves and maybe some lost campers into anything but a Forest Service Parking lot.

The last two campers rescued were from Switzerland and we gave them our Bear Spray under the condition they sent us a post card from FIVE different places. They have been tent camping now for over two years... somehow they need to buy a trailer and make it to five years on the road. They were back in Switzerland and coming back to the USA once new Visas were issued.

...and some signing up for a week or two find it... tough and not physically able to lay back and enjoy the sunshine.

Don't give up on us, Ray.

Some of us would follow you almost anywhere.

The reality is that some bite off more than they can chew, and a cancellation is much better than a no-show.

See you soon.

It's going to be a good year in Wyoming. I was starting to worry that it would be drought-ish. But the precipitation has improved a lot over the last month or so. Things are greening up nicely. Anyone cancelling will regret it. Here is a picture from my office window this afternoon. Click the picture for larger version.

And, you know, every rally I have ever been to has had last minute cancellations.....people get sick, it is too hot, too cold, raining, etc.

Alumalina in March had about 10 cancellations very close to time.

Me...I'm ready for Wyoming.

We're still in and looking forward to it. We'll be in West Virginia in early August then it's off to Wyoming. I thought since the names of both states started with W they were geographically close to each other. Aren't the states in alphabetical order?

Hey, does that take us off the trailer in waiting list?! If so, count us in! We're getting excited, with less than 3 months away

Not for me but please sign up if you like this type of thing. Ray appears to be a real expert, what an experience to go boondocking with him. Looks like a chance for a once in a lifetime trip, a trip that could be repeated. A great chance to get out of your comfort zone. You guys have a great time.

Tom
********

Maybe seven or eight years ago I inquired for any interest in doing the Oregon Trail Adventure from Independence, Missouri to Astoria, Oregon... with no takers on this Forum. It is lost among the hundred or thousand threads, since.

This paper does a very good job from Omaha, Nebraska to Idaho for history and then goes into detailed stops if you are interested. Wyoming has many of the BEST 1840 to 1865 history of migration to the West Coast.

When you get to South Pass, Oregon Buttes, Farson, Green River... we will be there and traveling on some of these trails via Covered Airstream.

Thank you Tom for adding this to the Thread.

I will be bringing my 'Oregon Trail' material with me on this trip. We might try an unplanned Covered Airstream 2016 off the grid camp, close to an Oregon or Bust campsite... just to get a sense of the real pioneers before us.

Some members on this Adventure may have BEEN on the 1850 trip and in 1862 watched Pony Express riders following the same route through Wyoming.

Added: We will be passing Rock River, Wyoming. Just to the northwest of town are the Original Union Pacific tracks laid in 1867 and onward to Utah. The tracks had been pulled in the later 1800's and moved to the SOUTH of Rock River, as you see them today. They appear as a raised grade with on tracks. I have followed these tracks west and find a lucky 1867 railroad spike... but NOT the solid gold one that... they claim was used and disappeared.

I had thought I would follow Brent & Connie down to Laramie, but may stop to see them a bit earlier and poke around somewhere else awhile before the meet-up date.

I am stopping to see someone in Spearfish first, and need to avoid Bike Week....at all costs.

Looking forward to seeing the crew from last year, and meeting some new folks.

Should we be getting our dogs vaccinated for anything special before this trip?
