What is this crud?

I purchased an 05 Bambi recently. Along the back seam of the trailer, there is what appears to be silver paint along the top of the seam where the rivets are. Any idea what this is and how to get rid of it?
A picture is attached. Thanks!

filiform corrosion. Search on it in the google airforums search tab, and you'll find a lot if info.

Doesn't look like filiform to me. It looks too symetrical. The filiform I have and seen is very random squiggles. Zooming in doesn't help, but doesn't look like corrosion either.

The 1/8" or so wide area looks like some kind of sealer that was wiped and some got between a couple of rivets during the wiping. If it's sealer, if removed and better job could be doneon the resealing. Or buy a rub rail to cover it up.

Are all those specks pitting?

Question

Hard to tell from the picture, it doesn't look like the filiform that I'm familiar with.

Could be an attempt to cover it up along the seam. Maybe a sealant of some sort.

Looks more like someone tried to "clean up" the corrosion, but really just made a mess.

Either way, IMHO, it started with filiform corrosion at the panel edges. Maybe someone tried to clean it up...maybe not. I think it still should be addressed as corrosion under the clear coat. Defined as filiform corrosion, I think.

What is this crud...?

Thanks for your replies!
I'm not sure the specks are pitting, per se. I think the photo exaggerated the specks due to a flash. Can't feel any pitting when I run my finger across the area as it's so minor.
I've adjusted the camera and took another shot which is better (attached).
Just looks like some sort of paint along the seam. I'm going to take a straight-edge razor to the paint this weekend and see if I can uncover something and perhaps get rid of it. If I solve the mystery, I'll let you know!

Mike,

It does look like paint thats covering some seam filiform corrosion.
Try not to damage to much of the surrounding clearcoat, just makes it harder to blend in. I've tried a lot of different coatings but found nothing that blends in, close but no cigar.

It's important to get all the filiform trails out and at least coat with a brush on clear.

Take a look at this thread...

Before you try a razor blade, look in the trailer manual and try one of the solvents mentioned in there. If it is a sealant, the solvent will remove the problem. Remember gentle does it, don't rub hard with the solvents.
Good luck!

Avoid scraping with razor blade or other sharp object—the skins scratches very, very easily, penetrating the clear coat and inviting more corrosion. It does look like some silver paint from the photo. If it is sealant it will be bumpy, paint not so.

Looks like filiform corrosion has been removed and the area painted. Not sure you can do any better, might be best to leave it alone. Keep an eye on it and do not get aggressive. I had similar corrosion on my last Airstream and did not remove it, just treated it with a product called Corrosion X or Boeshield T-9, and it did not spread.

Thanks for all your replies!
Think I'll just watch it for a while and treat it with Boeshield T-9.
