Tear in exterior aluminum

I just purchased a 1981 International that is in great shapeexcept for a brand new 10 ft long tear in the exterior sheeting. It is in between the two outside windows at about the 6' level.... It just happened so no moisture has penetrated into the insulation and it is covered. What is the best way to repair the exterior sheeting?? My plan is to drill out the pop rivets that are along the top length of the tear, slip a long piece of aluminum under the existing sheeting sort of like a shingle, then re rivet the entire length of the patch. Before I would rivet I would also liberally apply weatherproof caulk.
Has anyone done an exterior repair like this?? Any advice would be welcomed.

My advice would be to replace the entire sheet which is probably 4'x12'. you can order Alclad 2024 .032" from Aircraft Spruce online and they'll ship it rolled. Use Olympic rivets and Alcoa Gutter Seal, Sikaflex or Vulcem caulking, whatever is avail. up there.
Search the Forums for a post on 'sheet replacement' and you should find a detailedd description of a repair we did on my '67 Safari.
The 'jury-rig ' approach never really works out and you'll be surprised how simple it is to replace a sheet. You will need a helper though.

Dude, are you planning on a long term or a short term ownership? Is this a $'s issue or an ownership pride thing?

If you are into this like many here, and into the trailer for a long term, then the panel replacement (Bigger $'s) is your better bet against the shorter term ( Rivet in fix). Your $'s, your trailer, your call.

There are loads of threads on panel replacement, and there are likely dealers in your area (Alaska?) that might be able to assist.

If you are handy ( sounds like you are with the 'fix' you are proposing) then this likely is something you can handle. Search the threads a read away. Post ALL your questions!

Just another avenue to persue. Have at it, and have fun with your AS!
