Stainless Hand Rivet Squeezer??

Greetings all:

I am in the final phases of gutting my Bambi II for floor replacement. I began taking the inner wall aluminum off last evening and am good to go on regular pop rivets, but I am struggling with whether or not to remove the buck rivets around the entrance doorway which hold the inner aluminum on. Problem is I never buck riveted before (though I know I could learn) and these are the only buck rivets I would need to replace. I don't really want to spend the money on a buck riveting setup when this is very likely the only Airstream I will ever re-do.

So I was tooling around VTS's website and looking in the riveting section and found a hand tool for setting solid rivets: Stainless Hand Rivet Squeezer.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this tool? Seems it would do the job I need it to do as the only buck rivets I need to remove and reinstall are those around the entrance doorway which are very accessible front and back. I plan to use Olympics elsewhere on the exterior shell.

Thoughts or opinions?? Thanks! Ben

The Hand Squeezer works good for the rivets at the door but make sure you get the soft "A" rivets as it won't squeeze the hard "AD" rivets.

Thank you- would the ones sold through VTS work? As advertised: "We are currently selling our solid rivets in the soft 1100F alloy used on most Airstreams."

Works great for rivets that you can get to both sides of. You will only be able to use it on the edges - in as deep as it is wide. We have one and used it at the wheel wells and doorway - great tool!

Yes, the 1100 alloy is the softer rivet that you can use the hand squeezer on. I usually get rivets from Aircraft Spruce as there is one near me.

Doug, I notice the number of vintage Airstreams that you have. I currently am completing a full rehab on a 63' Bambi. My plan is to do another model. What vintage model do you recommend I start on.

Thanks,

Marty, to be worth all the work, you need to get another Bambi or Caravel or an early 50's. If it's something you want to keep, like our 60 Ambassador then a longer trailer is great for using. We have our Ambassador set up to be comfortable for longer trips.
