How do you determine what size shaver to buy?

I don't even know what they are used for, except for their name.

That's the problem...they are a single purpose tool.

You buy a rivet shaver to match the head size of the rivet...check out VTS for the 5/32" Rivet Shaver which is used with the 5/32" Olympic Rivets - they match the shape of original bucked rivets on Airstreams pretty well.

It works. I bought one off ebay right after we got the trailer. Never had to use it on the trailer but played with it. Center carefully and practice till you get the depth you like. Works best with a battery drill set toward the high end of the low speed setting. It leaves a slight flat spot - but I don't have the official Olympic bit ($149 from VTS is all I've ever found). You just want to shave it as little as possible - and feed slowly - until you get the "sealed" look....

Good luck with it if you go that route...

Here's a link to a much earlier thread explaining the rivet shaver with Olympic rivets. www.airforums.com/forums/f381/olympic-rivet-removal-and-installation-23.html

The thread was posted before we had our server meltdown and the photos were lost. I updated the info and photos towards the end of the thread which explains the whole process. This should clear up any questions.

I need to throw in here.... a dremel can not and will not do the job of a shaver. The shaver addresses the ENTIRE head right down to the skin. It does not just remove the center shaft. Also, there are shavers and their are shavers. Olympic makes the one designed for there rivet. It is a worthy tool to own. The bit does not have a flat spot in it unless it has been used on something besides aluminum. It creates a perfect dome that is exactly the same size as the originals in less time than it takes to plug in a dremel.
