Quick ? - What Size Rivets for Roof Vents.

Hi
I'm going to work on my Safari (1960 22') this weekend and am going to replace a roof vent or 2 from good junk parts. What size rivets do I need?

Also for future reference what size are the interior rivets?

Thanks so much.

Use "olympic" rivets and seal them with "vulkem" sealer.

Olympic rivets are 5/32" in diameter. The drill size is a # 21 drill bit, "NO LARGER."

We have both those items.

B-

There are two different sizes of rivits used on the interior of your AS. Depending on where and what they are being used for. a 1/16" for skins and a 1/8" for rails etc. As for the roof you will need the Olympic rivits which you can shave down. You can use the search funtion for more info. I purchase all my rivits including the exterior Olympic from Vintage Trailer Supply.

Andy- What I don't see on your site is the shaver. Do you stock it and how much?

Rick.

We stock the shaver, however we are asked not to post prices for anything that we sell.

Ball park price, since the latest price increase for the shavers, is over $200.00.

Someting very interesting just happened from our US Supreme court.

They have outlawed, to some degree, "Cyber RV parts and Coach sales." The court siad that manufacturers can set minimum prices for coaches as well as for parts, for anyone selling those items that do not have a store that the general public can visit.

Wonder how far that will go???

Not really. And for heavens skae, DO NOT use any form of silicone sealer on the exterior.

Andy-

Are any of our Superior Court Judges on the WBCCI IBT? And as Andy says; DO NOT use silicone on your AS!

Have a great weekend!

Avoid silicone at all costs as Andy sez -- it is terrible on aluminum -- either leaks like a sieve or paradoxically sticks so hard it's impossible to get off. There are multiple types of Vulkem so get the right stuff -- Inland RV, the Airstream Store, or Vintage Trailer Supply. Another equivalent product is Sikaflex 221 -- search the forums. Also see http://www.airforums.com/forums/f456...tml#post389634.

Some Olympic Rivets come with a rubber ring that would go between the rivet head and the body of the trailer. I was told to discard that ring as it will break down and cauce leaks.

Store an unused caulk tube in a couple bread wrappers in your freezer. This is bound to be more successful than the period when I'd try to put found birds in there... Let the caulk warm up some before you use it so the surface won't sweat as it's applied.

After looking at the information at Vintage Trailer, I went to Tremco's website. Check out the locator at:

Where To Buy - Tremco Industrial

I found a local Fastenall store very close to me. The same zip code. Why don't you check, there may be a source very close to you.

Richard, Great point! Forgot about that. I would remember if I were on the roof but sitting at my desk pretending to be working I forgot all about that one!

For sealant you could call around to the nearest Airstream dealer and see if they stock Sikaflex 221. My local dealer has it.
