The rub rail insert is supposed to cover the rivets, not have a rivet through it. FYI the rivets under the rub rail are typically pop rivets.

So the rub rail trim on the protector damaged the rub rail on the trailer....if you're the original owner take it to dealer. That probably will have done only surface damage to the rub rail insert but not all the way through. I wouldn't bother because its never seen anyway

That looks like regular pop-rivets where someone used ones that were twice as long as they should have been, my guess is a PO. You should just use a dremel and grind them down some, not to much or they wont hold anymore, leave a 1/16"-1/8" sticking out.
