Interior rivets

2013 flying cloud 23D.

Noticed two missing rivet heads inside the trailer. What is the correct replacement rivet and is one rivet gun better than another ?

You will need to drill out the body of the old rivet, using a #29 bit. Be very careful not to make the hole bigger...start the drill at a low speed centered on the old rivet...it may spin on you...you just have to work it until it comes out or drops through the other side. Then you can replace the rivet with a 1/8 inch blind or "pop" rivet. Most any good grade rivet gun from the big box store will work. I would not use their rivets however. You can get a bag of rivets from places like vintagetrailersupply.com...and always have them on hand.

Bingo. An easy fix if ever there was one. I use an 1/8 inch bit, 1/8 inch aluminum rivet and my dad's old pop rivet tool. Pretty easy.

Airstream work requires 3 different numbered drill bit size, for doing first class work.

# 30, # 21 and # 11.

Any size over that will guarantee poor workmanship.

The factory drill bit for a 1/8 pop rivet is # 30.

# 30 drill bit is .1285 or 3 1/2 thousands over a 1/8 rivet.

# 29 drill bit is .136 or 11 1/2 thousands over a 1/8 rivet.

As you can see, the # 29 is way to large to do anything except a sloppy job that most likely will fail in a very short time.

Some pop rivets have a steel shank, don't use these.

Fastenal has a good selection and great prices if you buy in bulk.

Be sure you have a positive depth stop on the drill bit before you try to drill out a rivet. I use a wooden block.
