Forming End Panel Segments

I guess its time that I ask for help! I have been reading these forums for a while now and I am becoming aware of all the wisdom and talent that is represented by the members here.

I have been blessed with the opportunity of becoming the care taker of a 1957 Overlander. Most of the trailer seems to be in very good shape . Im looking forward to seeing how well she shines up.The end caps are 13 panel and I can only imagine what they look like all polished up.

Now for the help that I need.

Can anyone tell me how a guy would form the bead that runs along the edge of each end panel segment? Sorry I dont have a photo of this, I havent picked up the trailer yet. I need to replace a few end panels and its my understanding that these are made from flat stock. My dilemma is how do I go about forming the bead, in the metal, that runs along the edge of each panel.I would like to find a way to make the panels at home. I dont mind investing in a few tools along the way.I am looking for a reliable, repeatable method to do this task.

I have to believe that someone else has had to do this. I have tried the search function and found many close topics. Can someone share the secret?

Rolling the edge of sheet metal is usually done with a bench mounted rolling tool. I would take a trip to any sheet metal shop and they will most likely be able to show you.

You may want to be holding the bow in the sheet as you apply the bead because the bead if formed while the sheet is flat will resist forming the curve when installed on the trailer and may kink.

You guys are great.

I want and looked at the Overlander on Saturday and of course I knew I needed to give it a good home. I agreed to buy it.

Both endcaps have been the target of falling trees. Other than that and a missing bathroom, broken window and some random holes that need filling, the trailer is in wonderful shape. Or at least it appears to be.

Forming the bead on the endpanels has so far seemed like my greatest challenge. And thanks to you guys I now feel better about That task.

I know I am looking at a shell off floor replacement. I need to add waste tanks, a water heater and a bathroom. I have alot of work ahead of me and I am looking forward to it.

Ill bring the trailer home when the snow melts. Until then I plan on reading everything I can. Thank you in advance for any wisdom you may share. Ill try to post some pics when I get her home.

Sounds like a great find and we all love pictures but what I really want to know is how is it you have the fortitude to wait until spring? I couldn't do it, I need to get started now otherwise I wouldn't be able to sleep at night.

I cant bring it home until the snow melts. Right now the trailer is in a field and the snow is deep. Another month or two and Ill be able to bring it home.
I would like to be sitting in it right now and working on it but I must act like I am grown up and wait

I dont know why I waited so long to do a project. This is an awesome community.

tinman54 I am glad to hear you have this tool, I have the feeling I may be interested in your assistance with this. I have started to get an understanding of what will be required to fabricate the end segments and would like to do it right. We will be talking in the near future. Glad to see your post! And thank you again.

Hi Kay what type of project are you working on? I am interested in talking.
I hope I can add something of value here, I sure have gained alot.

Im looking forward this!

Hi Brad,

Just to confuse you (as several people have pointed out), I’ll reply instead of Kay.

Last winter, about this time (well, right after the annual RV show at the Minneapolis Convention Center), is when we started looking for our AS. Found one in Mobile, AL in 2 weeks, and then, just like you, had to wait until Spring before we could go get her and bring her home. Sometimes, these MN winters are just too dang hard to put up with!

We have our 1972 31’ Sovereign, lovingly called Little Girl. Here’s our thread on what we’re doing, which is a complete Refurb: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f185/little-girl-refurb-50967.html.

Last year was spent doing all the deconstruction, and finally starting the reconstruction. That was a great turning point!

Segments

Hi Brad, Tried a couple samples today after work with some galvanized metal. After looking at the airstream there really is not to much of a bead on the edge but the bead roller or just a bend with the break both look pretty good.I shot a couple pictures but hard to get a good shot. Should be able to make something work when the time comes.

tinman I didn't know how lucky I was going to be with this purchase. I look forward to seeing the results of your test bends.

My wife is dying to come out and see the trailer, we may request to make a social call in the near future.

Just a slight bend would seem to make fabricating panels easier.I look forward to getting one or two old segments off and seeing if the edges are straight or are they cut in a slight radius. I will stay in touch
