Filiform corrosion

I have been reading about this corrosion on a thread. I understand it exists but what is it exactly. Is this a surface cosmetic issue only or will it lead to structural problems?

here is a link to the article mshwarz provided in the other thread (post 35)

2air has provided very good information. I would like to emphasize that the coating that filiform corrosion burrows under can be pigmented paint. In such a case, the corrosion is usually not noticable unless it is very extensive. Our Airstreams make such corrosion apparent because of the clearcoat. Not only is the corrosion visible, but its contrast with the surrounding non-corroded aluminum is very obvious.

The corrosion on non-coated aluminum parts is almost never if not never filiform.

We have plenty of this, but our clearcoat is trashed anyway. We plan on polishing our AS and hope this will help.

At first it is just an annoyance, but left alone for a long enough time can cause structural problems
