Exterior side belly pan

Hello everyone! I have read in a couple of forums that the side belly pan that joins the side skin at the rub rail goes over the side skin, not under it. That is how mine is on my '76 Sovereign. However, in the service manual, it shows the side pan going under the outside skin.

I don't like that my belly is over the side because it is the opposite of a shingle. It is just allowing more water to infiltrate the belly and rot the frame. What do you say? I am doing a frame off resto so should I put it back the way I think is right or do I put it back as I (and many others) have found it?

I was just thinking of posting the same thing - I thought this was very odd and a poor design as well. But, in one area, the banana wrap goes under the exterior skin - if is the front curb side corner. The rest of the areas, the banana wrap goes over the exterior skin.

I didn't have that on mine. I'm wondering if someone didn't replace the floor once before in mine. Fit to finish isn't a very good job

My '73 had the bellypan/banbana wraps overlapping on the outside of the exterior skins, and I assume this was how it was done at the factory. I agree that this is not the best way to go, but I put it back together the way it was after my shell-off. I did slather on a bunch of vulkem to minimize the water intrusion.

Good work and comment. My '67 Overlander has a small rotten spot in the very rear of the floor under the utility area because of this same poor design and/or execution at the factory 48 years ago. Common sense says correct such mistakes no matter how they were made if in the process of rebuilding. My trailer is still original and otherwise well maintained. The bad spot is not causing a problem so I have not repaired it as that would require removing most of the rear bath. Vulchem is taking care of the leak but requires reapplying from time to time.
