Double exterior skin???

Has anyone seen doubled exterior skins. I removed my banana wrap on the front curbside and found both the lower and mid skin is doubled. Click image for larger version

You can see the bottom edge in this photo and I noticed the skin was doubled when I removed the scare light

The interesting part of this picture is that there is no row of bucked rivets in the outer layer of skin holding the shell to the C-channel. My guess would be that this is a repair job where instead of removing and replacing the damaged segment, they just overlaid the replacement. They probably just slipped it in behind the lower trim without even removing the trim, and therefore, the lower rivet line was never exposed.

good luck!

This has been seen many times before, basically who ever did these repairs was looking for the cheap and easy way to repair the damaged panel. Do you plan on fixing this?

Would like to replace lower skin. It appears to not have a significant arch and not too difficult to replace. Would wait till the frame has been replace.
How is your trailer going?

The lazy and cheaper way of Airstream shell repair. Makes one wonder what is hidden underneath.

All of the perimeter segments that form the front end are formed aluminum. Herein lies the challenge of replacement. You basically have to either buy a new one from the dealer, in which case it won't be the same alloy as your original, or find a used one from a donor trailer. Either way, expect to pay about $500 for the part and the shipping. If your exterior segments (that cover the first layer) are in good shape, then I would suggest that you take the assembly apart, remove the under-layer, and then buck in the outside layer properly.

good luck!

I would like to replace the lower panel??? May have to leave them all in place if it's going to be major Pain. The quality of work leaving Ohio in 1971 is astounding. The c channel below this panel was cut about 2 inches short and contributed to a great deal of floor rot. Frame and floor must be sorted out first

Double exterior skin???

Aerowood , I have read your posts and re-read many of them. You continue to be a major source of inspiration. The body came off today and I am beginning striping and assessing the frame.

The double skins hid many rivets. Any suggestions on replacing that lower panel. Can I get away with a flat replacement, no compound bends. I have a tremendous amount of respect for you airframe experience and guidance. Thanks again
