Cutting thu both outer and inner shells for access

A dealer did an “elephant ears” fix on the rear separation five years ago. I need to repair the repair and want to put PEX in when I have the back end torn open. I want to improve my access to the rear compartment so that I can insert the wood into the “C” channel and install the PEX afterwards. Do you see any problem with taking off the outer elephant ears and cutting a similar hole in the inner shell? After I do the repairs, I will rivet two patches over their respective holes.

I think when you remove the patches, that you will find the floor channel broken in 2 places.

A patch of any size, won't fix that problem.

Thanks Andy. I will let you know what I find. I hope the chanel/hold down is not broken. Cutting through both skins will give me the access to replace the wood and slide in the PEX. I am a little concerned about cutting holes into both skins - I do not want to weaken the shell to a point where it might fail in the future.
