To determine the proper length of rivet when it is inserted into the hole, 1 1/2 D should protrude. After the rivet is shot the buck tail should be 1 1/2D in diameter and the should be 1/2D in height. D=the diameter if the rivet shank.

Thanks for the info and the link, I'm replacing the rear 4' of floor and it looks like I need to drill out the bucked rivets under the rub rail and I'm trying to get the courage to do so. Are the rivet guages they sell of any use?

Are they of use? Hmmm. I used mine the first three or four times, and when I knew what it looked like, I just used my eyes.

If you have talked to someone that has taken off outside panels with vulken seam sealer .
You will be amazed how tough it is to get a panel off with that application, even with the revets drilled out!!
I couldn't believe it!!! Buck revitting is the best, but olypic rivets are the alternative with vulken sealer!!
