56 Bubble Whale Tail

I am repairing the Dutchmans Tail on my 56 Bubble that was done by the prior owner. Does the Top of the tail(highest part on the trailer) go over or under the Aluminum skin? I would guess over based on the rivet holes and the molded edge. Can somebody take a look at there own and let me know.

No, the detail on the photo is too limited. I have looked at all of the posted pics and nobody shows the close up detail at the top of the "whale tail". Is the tail tucked in under the top aluminum or is affixed on top? This trailer is a beautiful one, that is why I dont want to do it incorrectly. Again my assumption is the tail is affixed over the top.

just a guess

If it was made by airplane people it would be tucked UNDER. Won't pick up water or air when in motion. Besides, it would just be the way a crafstman would do it.....I think.

I need a for "sure answer", it sounds as if you don't own one with this tail. It is true, likely under is better but the design does not lend itself to it. I need someone to look at their unaltered tail! The trailer's that is (at the top).

This is Not an Exact Science

One of the things you will find out about vintage Airstream's is that little is exact. The older the model the more this is true. Recently a model showed up that no one even knew existed - even the folks here who are much wiser about Airstream's than I'll ever be. That's part of what makes this so much fun...

Here's yet another example of that. This is a 1960. Notice the 13 panel end cap.... Airstream quit making the 13 panel cap in 1957. Good luck with your Airstream...
