What Year Did Classic Cabinets Change?

We're still searching for the "perfect" Airstream, and one of the questions we have is, "What year did Airstream go to the two toned wood cabinets in the Classic?".

We prefer the warmer look of the uniform wood, but prefer solid over laminate.

I could be wrong but I believe the Classic went from oak to hickory on the 2007 model. My 2006 still had the oak.

Yes, 2007 is Hickory.

It's my understanding that the Hickory wood species is harder and more durable than the Oak it replaced. The non-uniform appearance (normal) is an "in the eye of the beholder" type of thing.

I have a catalogue from 1991. Offered the hickory as an option that far back!

My 1989 catalog makes no mention of the option (as reference to quote).

From a stylistic viewpoint, what is the consensus view on the Hickory? The non-uniform color just offends my Teutonic sense of order and symmetry.

I know my dealer told me the story of a customer with an Airstream motorhome that had the hickory cabinets. We knew the owners and she did not like the two tone shades of the hickory. They asked for a warranty replacement of the cabinet doors to one's that had a more even tone. Apparently the warranty repair was approved by Airstream and they sent new hickory cabinet door that were more evenly matched in color. There was still some variation but the new set were much more even.

I like the 2-tone hickory. It makes it like a log cabin or something. I wonder how the appearance of the 2-tone hickory will change over the years. I really like the cherry in the new Classics.
I reckon since I am poor and broke I will have a 2-tone hickory Classic until I die-
I also like the solid oak of the older trailers.
I really like the birch in the really, really old trailers.

Me, too! The problem is that we like the floor plan of the Classic 31, as it is the identical layout of our Bluebird. We just haven't fallen in love with te cabinets on the newer Classics.

Yes, we had a 1989 Bluebird SP36. Got a blazing 4.5 mpg, but could take a direct hit from an RPG.

2007 was the model year for the changeover from Oak to Hickory. The point regarding 'eye of the beholder' is spot on. We like the warmth and uniformity of the Oak, HOWEVER it is a personal choice.

As a professional wood carver I kind of like the hickory wood grain. If i wanted uniformity I could always paint my cabinets any color I wanted or settle on an International for the uniformity of the cabinetry. What I do like on my classic is the absence of all those cabinet mirrors that came with the oak. Different strokes for different people.

I have the laminate because it's practical and durable for our needs. I have cherry cabinets in my home but they darken - a lot- with sunlight. While beautiful, it's like camping with fine furniture- looks beautiful but .... My next trailer will have the Euro-type laminate look or hickory. I have hickory wood in another area and I love the warm feel of the lighter natural tones and it seems more durable. Check out this Gorgeous remake from Timeless Trailers - fabulous!!! It Looks Like a Silver Bullet On the Outside, But Inside, It's a Luxurious Getaway - TechEBlog Just pick what you like and what kind of care you're willing to invest - it's an Airstream - it's beautiful!

We have an '05 Limited that has the Hickory cabinets (that came with the limited package). The cabinets are one reason we went with this trailer. I love the Hickory. Also, as Carver 1 said above, it does not have all the mirrors, which I also like, solid wood panels.

I specifically chose a '13 for the lack of mirrors and the lack of carpet.
