Updating a 1965 Safari 22' Bathroom

We just bought our first Airstream last month--YAY for us!--and now the fun begins sprucing her up. We want to update the bathroom, and we're looking for ideas to accomplish this...

If we can score an original bathroom liner, that would be fabulous. Any ideas where we could get one like the one seen in the attached image?

If we can't score an original bathroom liner, has anyone successfully remodeled a 1965 Safari 22' bathroom with as little demo as possible? That is, we want to keep the original wardrobe cabinet on the right AND maintain a tub, sink, and toilet somewhere in the room. (It's a tight fit.. See floor plan image.)

Keep your eyes open on the forums and Classifieds. There are always people wanting to gut their AS and totally remodel. We have the same layout in our 66 Safari we renovated a few years ago. It appears tight (and it is), but showers aren’t that bad. Good luck and hopefully someone will respond to your thread with a bath unit up for grabs. Good luck, Bubba

Probably a stupid answer but I have one here in good nik. Problem is that it is in the UK. Came out of my 66 Tradewind.

I'm doing a 64, same issues but looking into refinish possibilities. I have successfully used appliance epoxy on a bathroom sink in the 76, 31 footer we had.

Sorry to say, I wouldn't hold my breath (or my plans) waiting for one. You're looking for 50+ year old brittle plastic that's really difficult to take out in one piece. Mine was already cracked, and fell into pieces. Many of the problems that folks have with floor rot, etc, are due to leaky bathrooms, so you wouldn't want to install something that's a proven problem. And it would have to be close to your location, as shipping it would be a nightmare.

Is that picture your removed bath? If so, very impressive! Maybe look into an epoxy/cloth fix to your existing? If yours is out, you could coat the backside, install woven roving to the pressure points, and fill the frontside. Once it's in place, use some tub refinishing kit to make it perfect.

Riversforlife and Bubba, Interested in your exchange as I ponder whether to restore or rebuild my 74 Sovereign bathroom. Riversforlife, could you tell me a little more about the epoxy paint you used on bathroom fixtures? What brand, can you brush it on, how did it look, did it stand up to wear? My fixtures (sink, shower base, etc.) are sound, but stained and awful looking. I'm hoping that fabric replacement, paint and laminate flooring will make my newly purchased one-owner and basically sound vintage AS presentable. I just joined the Forum and this was my first post.

The shower rod in our tub was the original pre-bent aluminum extrusion. I have read where others have come up with clever curtain rods when theirs was missing.
Kerry Westco, not sure what Riversforlife used to restore their tub, but we used Meguiars Marine/RV Fiberglass Restoration System which worked well. Good luck, Bubba

Also Pythonesk, VTS sells a large curtain tract that can be bent to appear and function like the original shower curtain rod.

We restored our 64 Safari bath no problem. I repaired the cracks with fiberglass and resin on the underside then v grooved the cracks on top with a dremel and filled with epoxy filler. Sanded and primed with epoxy primer and topcoated with a two part polyurethane gloss from Jamestown supply. They are a marine supply co and sell it in quarts. I cut off the toilet part of the fiberglass so I could install a new RV toilet. Everything works great.

Can't remember exactly, but it was either Rustoleum or Krylon appliance epoxy in a spray can. It was the almond or bone color. 2 coats, went on very nicely. It was just the sink so it didn't get foot traffic and looked great.

LOVE your bathroom remodel. We have a 1966 Tradewind with a very similar bathroom set up. How did you replace the shower curtain? We've got the same curvy track up top and want to use a new curtain (we've got the original and while it's cool . . it's also brittle and a bit moldy).

Welcome JennD to these Airstream Forums and the vintage Airstream hobby. I too had a 66 Trade Wind that I renovated and I really enjoyed doing it. That got me started with my Airstream hobby. "Alumin-ites" they call it. Get hooked, and there is no going back.

I completely rebuilt the bath in my Trade Wind as the waste water tank was rather pathetic, and my plywood subfloor was rotted out due to a leaky toilet. I perceive Airstream liked bathtubs in their trailers as they seem so "like home" while out traveling. I installed a much larger waste water holding tank system and had to move the toilet location to accommodate. It went from 5 gallons to 40 gallons capacity. Here is a photo of the finished project, and one of my Trade Wind. They are very popular trailers. A perfect size.

This thread you found is rather old like me. But I might suggest you post in the Member Introductions section with a title that might say "New Here, 66 Trade Wind" or something like that and I'll bet you will garner some vintage Airstream enthusiasts. Post a picture or two also. And, take a look at the Knowledge Base found at the bottom of the Forums page. Then click on Trade Wind and your year range. You can read a lot of good info about your 1966 Airstream travel trailer.
