Tambour door replacement material???

Hi does anyone have any other alternatives/ideas on what material to use to replace the tambour cabinet doors on a 1972 safari. I'm trying to replace the long thin tambour door which rolls opens side ways below my sink and above my 2 galley cabinet doors. I was thinking of using a thick but rollable plastic like the portable cutting mats that you can roll up. I just can't find a piece big enough or a place to buy it. Any ideas????

The galley tambour door does not work too well. I have "fixed" mine a bunch of times. I made a facing and cabinet doors and salvaged the tambour for the centers of the cabinet doors to keep the original look.

Hey Lumatic any pics? I'm not looking to replace the tambour door with more tambour but a different alternative and this might be it. Thanks.

I made my own, glueing (contact cement) canvas used for oil painting onto strips of wood I cut. I am traveling at the moment but when I return I can send pictures. I had a 1972 , 25ft Land Yacht, worked very well except the vertical slide at sink seem to stick a little.

Hey lumatic thanks for the pic. What about the sliding door right above the doors in the pic? Has anyone made a sliding door for that out of wood or plexi?

When we redid our 72 Safari...we had to remove all the cabinets. All of the tambour doors were gone. The PO had curtains made that were on tension rods. While that was simple it looked like we were in the 50 at Grandmas house.
Before we reinstalled the cabinets we removed all the tambour boxes that the material rolls up into. We purchased the plastic tracks currently by Airstream. I was able to cut and mount to the inside of cabinet. We cut pieces of 1/4 inch underlayment to use as bi-pass doors. You could use plastic that is somewhat see through or any other 1/4 inch thick material...

curioscat has the right idea. I repaired mine with heavy artist duck canvas, using 3M spray adhesive. Remove door, clean up the strips, lay them out and glue on the canvas. I used primed canvas ( because that is what I had available ), but unprimed would work as well.

Since we wanted to make a floor plan change...queen bed in back and full bath in middle...BUT wanted to keep most of the original interior, we repurposed cabinets. That is the 70's cabinets can be taken apart and cut to fit your needs and not change the overall TT weight. That said the Cabinet over the Fridge was shortened to the width of the new fridge and make a space for microwave. Sorry NO DOORS. The little pantry that was next to fridge was reused else where. Cant recall if it was in the bath or the cabinet (pantry) to the right of the sink base (in previous pictures.
If you are looking to keep the original Tambour look...as others posted it an be done and looks VERY original. we just thought that over time we would have to repeat the repairs.
I think the nice thing about our doors is that if you wanted to use different materials.. as long as it fits in the track you are good to go. We have been tossing around the idea of the frosted plastic doors for the overhead cabinets.

Does anyone have experience removing the vertical tambour doors? I have fixed the horizontal doors gluing fabric onto the backs and reinstalling. It worked very well. The vertical doors are not so easily removed for fixing. Would appreciate any help

The vertical ones are easy, there are screws that hold the tracks in place. Two on each side. Take them out and the whole assembly comes loose. It’s a little tricky putting them back, because you need to assemble it roll it up then slide it into place.
