So when did Tambour Go Away

So when did Tambour go away? I think sometime in the mid 80's but I am guessing. Why did they get rid of it?

Well, we have an 84 and all the cabinets have tambour doors. And they all work. So they were in there in 1984. We love 'em..

Tambour

My 85 Limited has them throughout. They work fine everywhere except the horizontal tambour on the console in the front. Gets stuck all the time.We open it and just leave it open. Kind of defeats the purpose
Any remedies to make it slide smoother or slide at all!

We have all tambour and they all work. Had one of the horizontal ones that was a little sticky and fixed it by rubbing a little candle wax into the slot it rides in, both top and bottom. Seemed to work fine.....Phil

Thanks Phil I'll give that a try. I actually meant the vertical Tambour, all of the wall mounted cabinets have horizontal Tambour and they all work just fine.

Our 1989 never had it, which is kind of sad! I love tambour!

Most of mine are intact accept the one in the entertainment center and the PO decided to cut that one. So unless someone is remodeling and throws it out I guess I will be tambourless in that area. I think some tambour made of real wood would be cool. I expect it is expensive. The plastic stuff is like $500 for a 4x8 sheet (ouch!!!).

I am not real fond of the warping the plastic tambour has. It seems it goes away when the stuff is hot.

They didn't, our '08 SS has them and we love em. They stay closed on bumpy roads.

Well you see a lot of them forsale that have regular cabinet doors on them. Was this an option or have they just been remodeled?

Use a high quality food grade silicone spray on the track & on the door also. Should make a HUGE difference on them sliding. Silicone works well on anything that needs to slide. Just don't get it on the hardwood floors, makes them slick & may cause a fall. Safe & happy travels. John

Our 83 has tambour throughout. Really enjoy them as the "go away" when open.

I spray the runners with silicon spray every so often. Even the horizontal sliding one in the galley works nicely.

I thought I didn't like them when I bought it, but in use I love the tambour design! They take up precious little room when open and automatically close (the horizontally oriented ones) if you forget to shut them before rolling out. I'm going to try and free up one sticky one in the rear bath, but otherwise mine (c. 1974) all function as if new. Pretty good for a 40 year old vehicle!
