Shades behind Tambour doors of upper cabinets?

I just bought a 1970 Caravanner. When I removed the tambour doors from the upper street side cabinets, I found metal holders that appear to be there for a shade. Were there pull down shades behind the Tambour doors? What would that purpose be for. If you are enlightened, please share.
Thanks
