replace gaucho with store bought sleeper sofa?
we have just purchased a 79 Trade Wind and trying to find out if anybody had replaced their front gaucho with a sleeper sofa of any kind and where did you purchase it. I have read where many of you have replaced with recliners and that would work but we still have 1 son living at home that would travel with us.
Also, Does the futon mattress really work well? Can you completely gut the gaucho and replace with a full futon and framework?
Any advice would be helpful.

There was no goucho in our Sovereign when we bought it back in 2004. After looking at the options we went with a Flexsteel Sofa. If you go this route, go with one that has pull out drawers in the bottom.

We bought this set for our Limited and it looks like it will work well. We bought it at IKEA when we were at Picacho Peak Rally. It has storage on the chaise and it makes into a double bed.

Recovered Gaucho
When we purchased our "78" Ambassador last year the gaucho was in rough shape. I removed it and bought a gaucho out of a 2002 AS. Because we didn't care for the material, we bought ultraleather material and had it reupholstered by a local upholsterer. It cost us $150.00 to have it recovered plus the cost of the material. We could have gotten material off of the upholsterer but opted to purchase it off the internet. This way we got exactly what we wanted. It was cheaper to do this than buy a new flexsteel sofa.

We are in the process of a complete interior remodel....we took out our two twin beds and will be replacing one side with this model flip sofa....love the fact that it folds up when not in use to have alot of extra walking space.
RV Surplus
We are taking a road trip this weekend up to the RV capital, Elkhart IN to pick some furniture up! Also check out the ideas at IKEA they have some really nice small sofas that may also work for you!

Question on Sofa Replacement
We would love to put a sofa in like any of which has been show. Our problem is the water tank is right in the back. Plus we sould have to remove all of the struts to the Gaucho. We have a '78 Argosy. Did any of your have the same situtation?

With the exception of Kevin and Monique's Argosy, none of us have the fresh water tank in the front. When you do, that limits your options, pretty much, to the standard goucho.

For the Sovereign
I needed to get a replacement couch which would clear the batteries, the inverter, the converter....so I went with this....I needed lots of clearance at both ends and vertically for the 11 inch battery boxes. This would also clear any water tanks located up front.
There is no pull out drawers but there is plenty of space still available for container storage and "stuff it in...make it fit" storage. I think the price for a new one is way to high...but I did it. Flex steel couches from the Elkhart meltdown are a great deal

I bought a couch at Campers World in Tampa last winter($900).My old fold down couch was VERY uncomfortable.I had a heck of a time anchoring it to the floor.Iwanted to use the existing hole .Ended using strapping metal with holes about 3/4 of an inch wide.Which I looped around the tubular legs of the couch and then screwed the strapping metal to the floor . It is really solid.I thought about getting two recliners. But decided I needed the extra sleeping space.If you don't need the sleeping space I would go with 2 recliners. It's so much easier to just take thru the door and not have to attach to the floor. And if you do attach them to the floor it is so much easier.I noticed if I'm remembering correctly on the Airstream product site. That they are now selling an Airstream with two recliners .Good Luck and Happy Camping to You DR J

The sofa that we purchased over the weekend that I posted in my previous post...is made to have clerance over the wheel wells.....that would be enough also for you to clear against...the water tank or battery box. She had one in her shop that we thought about buying that was not the black that I was looking for but a taupe colored instead. I am very happy with my new purchase and will be doing the install next time my DH gets home from work.  Happy Camping!

Thanks for all of the tips. The simplest is putting a futon on it. We have looked at ones with inner springs. We thought we would by one and try it out. Then if that one works we will order a second one for the other gaucho. Your options have been helpful.

Hello everyone! I,m a relatively new member to the Forum and this is my first post! I hope I tagged on on to an appropriate thread. I have a '77 23ft. Safari with mid twins. I plan to replace the front gaucho with a dinette and have considered converting my rig to a mid double with the facing storage closets and credenza. My question is whether the front gaucho that I have will work as a mid gaucho on the curb side or are factory mid gauchos totally different in design? Any help would be appreciated...thanks!

Hi Robert, I am pretty new here too. My husband and I are removing the gaucho from the front (replacing it with two recliners) of our '72 Overlander and using it to convert our mid double size pull-out to two twin beds. We measured it and it will fit perfectly in length-hopefully width. We will not use both beds completely pulled out but keep them in the twin-size positions on both sides made up as beds. However, if we need more sleeping space- one or the other can be converted to their full size. Adding the extra twin bed to the middle of the trailer will require some repositioning of closet/storage space and the refrigerator. But it looks doable. (fingers crossed-ha!)
Hope this gives you some ideas.

**Update** I started this post in the Spring and have finally found my replacement for my gaucho! After much shopping online, reading others posts, taking into consideration "tongue weight" and working around our inverter and battery that protrudes inside our AS I have made a purchase!!!
We completly gutted the gaucho and all side wall componants (pull out table) put new carpet in entire AS. (Not our first choice but a good one for now so we can enjoy our AS right away) Lowes remnants...$45.00 for entire AS!!! And now we have a new sofa(not a sleeper) that fits perfectly into the space!! I am so excited!!! We shopped at Ikea looking at all futons and how they would work in our space. Ended up looking at sofas. Karltrop and Ektorp are their names. weird....anyway. Once we found one we liked and knew would fit we came back home and I began the search on Craigslist. Found one right away. purchased for $175.00 as apposed to $400.00. It was less than a year old and in perfect condition.
Ours is white and I have purchased new cushion covers off of ebay 1/2 price as well in a light tan/brown color. Sofa is light weight and easily fit through the AS door. Check it out.....well you could if I could figure out how to insert pics!!??? HELP!
