No as you can see in the pictures it folds flat in the up position. The wood cover is on the top so the 1/2" does not interfere with folding. When in the closed position the 2 pieces are flush and form a smooth top work area.

I'm glad I stumbled upon this thread. Great lesson here about keeping the cover fully open when cooking on the burners.

adonh, I love the butcher block cover. It looks great!

Same thing happened to mine several years ago. I was able to sand the entire front edge back with 80 grit, smooth up with 400 grit and polish with "Mothers Aluminum & Mag" polish from an automotive parts store. Looks about 98% OK.
